|
|
The five-speed transaxle for the VW Transporter T3 (aka Vanagon in North America), was available as factory-stock with the 1·6 litre turbo-diesel engine and the 2·1 litre high-compression, flat-four petrol engine.
It was also available as a factory-fitted option, with the 1·6 & 1·7 litre diesel engine and 1·9 litre flat-four petrol engine.
I have details of the gear & final-drive ratios. _________________ Regards.

094 five-speed
091
The 091 fits snug, maybe 1/4" between the mounting bolts and the torsion bar housing. The shifter fits over the torsion bar housing

No, you should be good.
The nose of the van trans is smooth without the mount in place. I don't think you'll have any issues. The 2wd 5spd is a rare bird here in the states. If you find one you'll pay for it . First gear also isn't used in normal driving. It's a off road gear, the nob is labeled g-4 on our vans.
There's also a full side shift conversion, all the way up to the shifter and floor bucket from a five speed van you'll need. Price all parts accordingly. |
Yup, we'll need it to be more comfortable offroad and especially overcoming steep inclines and rocky surfaces on high altitude (up to 16.000ft, robs a LOT of power). Stop-and-go city traffic in La Paz, Bolivia, is a real b*tch on the clutch _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt & EDIS // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

I had been thinking the same thing in the past months. It would be ideal to use a vanagon diesel 5 speed box with the really short first gear. You could them add an LSD or possibly a syncro locker. Certainly interested in what you find out. |
Exactly! We currently have a Peloquins LSD in our 091, which is an awesome piece of kit. So we'll definitely have to fit the new transaxle with another LSD or a locker.

This looks like a good option, but it will require cutting the torsion bar tube...

|
|
We want to look into the options of swapping our 091 transaxle for a 5 speed unit so we can fit a "granny" gear, basically an extra short first gear. The reason why we want a shorter first is for offroading and climbing steep inclines. We'd like to keep the stock ratio's for first to fourth more or less the same as stock. We just need an extra gear on the low end.
What transaxle would be the easiest to do this with? Can we fit a 094 box without cutting the torsion bar tube? I've been searching the forums but couldn't find anyone who fitted a 094. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD
