Thanks for the inspiration! I am starting on a '71 and love to see these build threads, can't wait to see yours come together!

So my wife thought I could get a $99.00 paint job and I said, um...no. I found a guy on Craigslist who was local and worked at a body shop and did some work on the side. Dad wanted the original color but home slice couldnt match it so he did a Viper Red on it. He sent me these text pics:

So my friend and I went to pick it up. All in all I'd say I was happy with the outcome. He shot a single stage paint and no clear coat.
I got some good shots of her that afternoon at home

That's a marvellous red- really strong. Car will look GREAT if you keep those wheels and polish them up. Good work with the improvised tools to readjust the front fenderwell.

Looks great! You did all the sanding, putty and priming yourself, eh? How long did you let it sit in bare metal while you were puttying and what did you use for primer? I'm slowly getting through bodywork but I'm looking towards paint right now and there's so much to learn!

I think all total it was 5 to 10 days bare metal but sat in my garage the whole time. I used a high build, sandable primer of the rattle can variety. Each coat was wet sanded to make it as smooth as possible. But, no matter how good it looked, the old saying was true; paint shows every flaw in your prep.

Okay, hats off to the guys and gals who do headliners. Mine tightened up as the temperature went up, but it if I had to do it all over again, I'd pay someone to do it for me. yes, I would!

There are no pics of the motor build up and I don't honestly know why. But from April to September I spent most of my time finessing the wiring, motor build and a lot of polishing!

Dad had Parkinson's Disease and suffered several strokes during these last 4 years. Last year, in June, he had a nasty fall and suffered from a severe head injury from which he never recovered. He passed away January 7th this year. When his will was released we found that he had left the Bug to me. I was honored to say the least. Saturday August 8th 2014, my wife and I went to Rome, GA and brought her back home

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. Its wonderful he got to drive his bug again and i'm sure it meant the world to him that you did it. Crying or Very sad

He knew who was getting it probably long before you did the restoration. Such a nice story with both a sad and happy ending. My condolences and well wishes for you and your wife. Its a great little car with alot of history.
