Sadly, my beloved Westy burned to the frame recently. My insurance (State Farm) proposed a total loss settlement that is insultingly low-ball and based on two comps that aren't even close to the condition of my Westy!

I've learned a lot from this forum (thanks!) and I'm planning to exercise my CA rights to pay for an independent appraiser and contest their offer. Can anyone recommend a good classic car / VW-knowledgeable appraiser in the Bay Area?

In the meanwhile, I'm collecting my own comps so feel free to post them here: 1990 weekender vanagon, 145k mi, excellent interior & body, new cylinders & completely rebuilt cooling system, new tires, purchase price $15,000.

Thanks! Matt

Not a recommendation, but they certainly have the sales history to back up their opinion!

Rhonda Madden (who I posted above) is who Stephan's Farmer's insurance agent, Liliya Visitiu 916-921-6177, uses and recommends.

Also call Marco at Buslab in Berkely and get a reference from him.
Karmakanix is another shop that may be able to refer you to a certfified appraiser in the Bay Area.

You may also check with your insurance agent on whether estimates from these shops will suffice. (in leiu of an appraisal report)

GoWesty is good for comps, BTW.. but an underwriter may balk at the numbers they provide.

Best of luck on this and report back your experiences.
