I have been looking for quite a while for someone to make me a new vin plate, as the PO lost the original during restoration. Not finding anyone to do this, most said it was illegal, I stumbled across this guy in Ohio that remanufactures various stickers, like tax stickers, old inspection stickers, etc. The website is:www.inspectionsticker.com. I sent him my vin number off of the title, and a mock up of what it would look like courtesy of Kubelmann, and got a cool sticker to put in that place. I took a few pics with the phone, and would be happy to send to anyone interested, I am computer challenged, so haven't reached the point of posting.

Here's another option . . .

http://www.kdf.cz/web%20KDF_EN/417.jpg

Available from KdF Osnice, http://www.kdf.cz/web%20KDF_EN/index.htm

You would need to stamp all of the appropriate details into the replacement data plate.

Maybe its me, but I just don't see a sticker or those other plates being viable substitute.

Your right, not trying to be a viable substitute, just adding a "replica", to the vacant spot where the vin should be. If I could get a real looking substitute, I sure would.

Hello, I had the same problem. I went to a place where they make trophies and commemorative plate and tray. I paid $100 Mexican pesos about $7.57 US dollars, and this is what I got:

I took mine off before my car was painted in 1983. Somehow, I lost it. (It's probably in a box in my garage loft.) Anyway, it's been 31 years, and all I have are the four rivet holes (maybe only 2 are used for the plate; can't remember). So, in all of that time, I guess I've learned to live without it. I hope to find it someday; probably when I move, and I'm forced to sort through all of my VW stuff.

Maybe one could be made with one of those 3D plastic printers, and painted "dull aluminum". I can create a vector file if anybody wants to try it.
Good luck, Mondshine

That's a fantastic idea! A great method for labeling switches and things as well, if one needed that done.... Much nicer looking than simple decals..

Sure, no worries mate. I'll be happy to get one for you. Just send me the information of your Thing and I'll make it happen. It won't be any trouble at all. I think I can send the VIN plate by mail.

Thanks in advance jjrannauro, all the info is pictured already in this topic, mkparker posted the pic of the sticker I got, the 1st reply to this topic. My vin is: 1833015745. All the other info would be the same as your plate, I believe.

I think this shop in the UK can make an exact replica:

Here is a link to the "custom" section:

http://www.vin-plate.co.uk/custom_vin_plates.html

The plates come blank, but they sell a number punch kit:
