|
|
Hi all!
Just purchased a Dune runner with Tbird style hood.... would love to get my hands on some sidepods. Anyone with any advice on how to try and locate some?
I'm assuming, because of the low door panel area, that they have to be dune runner specific to fit....
any advice appreciated!

You would have to find specific pods (probably a needle in a haystack) or make your own.
I am all for making parts and pieces but be prepared for the time and level of commitment required to undertake making parts.
Tijuana Tom (TJKustoms) did some nice mods to some side pods for his manx so you could do something similar.
The cost of making your own left and right pods, making molds, laying up new ones would be in the 1000.00 range. Unless you could find someone else that wanted them and you could sell sets of them, it would not be in your interest to make molds. See my thread on the monocoque storage module here on the samba. I have yet to actually tabulate the cost of this but I can assure you that for a one off, it was time consuming and costly.
You could cheat and make the masters and lay glass over them and finish sand/paint etc. That would labor intensive but cheaper. Keeping high level of detail on a process like this is a challenge. |

I've never seen a Dune Runner with sidepods and I don't remember seeing them in any of their adverts. TBH it looks great without them IMHO. Manx or Berrien pods could probably be cut and trimmed to fit pretty well as I presume the Dune Runner was based on a modified Manx body.

I'm sure it'd be a sinch to trim those down to suit, but they're not what most people would consider to be true sidepods.
Do you recon that those smooth sides/mudguards came as standard with the kit? |

I agree it does look great without them! I just came across this one with the pods and thought they looked cool.... and would allow for speakers in sides.
I'm not intent enough to try and make them... but thought if I happened to find someone out there who wanted to part with some.... it would be a nice addition... |

I have a pair that I paid a handsomely for. Wasn't easy to get the guy to pull them off the Dune Runner he was selling either ! I want to build a Wonderbug replica and that is another one of the only Dune Runners I have ever seen with them on. I have them put away for now and have been looking into reproducing them. as Mono Manx stated, that can get expensive so its on hold. Bart |

Well you live and learn as they say. I'm not actually convinced they add to the shape but each to their own... |

There was a guy on the Archives site who was selling various molds he had made to repop Deserter pieces. I discussed the process with him and it seems doable but currently it's on hold. I was thinking of doing the T Bird hood for those wanting to change out the mini Mercedes or the Shelbyette. For some reason Dune Runners seem to favor those back in the day, but I dunno |

It would be cool to see a Wonderbug replica. Good luck with your sidepod search. _________________ Or you can call me………Tim

It would be nice to know where the real one is ! You would think that would be something someone would know - even Schlepcar, where are they? |

I've been doing internet searches for years.
I'm sure Wonderbug was stripped of the mouth/bumper and simply sold dirt cheap at auction or to some studio employee who didn't give it a second thought. Maybe one day it'll show up.
Schlep would really be a find. _________________ Kyle, Buddy, and Herbie the Love Bug ll53

Just picked up someone's unfinished Dune Runner with side pods project and thought I'd share some pics. |

I recently bought a set of Dune Runner sidepods from a fellow Manx Club member who had purchased them thinking they would fit her Empi Imp. They even match the color of my buggy. So, keep looking! They're out there.
radardog, could you post or pm me a picture of how your pods are attached (or not) at the bottom edge? |
