Started cleaning/detailing under the hood, here are some before and afer pics. The apron and hood latch came out real nice. The spare tire well looks much better too, although there are some very minor dents and paint loss. I am planing on re painting the tank and three acess plates in the spring...more to come. |

I love how you're preserving this bug! FYI, you can remove that road tar or undercoating in your fender wells with Goof off. It works great at removing it and not affecting the paint. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I bought some other stuff for the tar as the place I went didn't have Goof Off, it didn't work, I will get some and get after that tar and share the results.
I use Comet cleaner and water with a tooth brush, and #0000 steel wool on certain areas. Also Mr Clean and a tooth brush works good for light oil and grease cleaning, it cuts through and rinses with water.

Great job cleaning her up. In my experience, it's extremely gratifying seeing the fruits of your labor. The great part is that your labor and sweat equity is free.
I used this spray on my bus to clean up the road tar on the fender wells. It's not too toxic or strong.

Some more before and after pics from under the hood. Someone spray painted the dash cover and cardboard tray black at some point, getting over spray in several areas including the hinge spring. All was removed and detailed...much better.

The over spray is gone and all is waxed. To clean around/behind the wiring I used a tooth brush with a mild mix of Comet cleaner and water. I would scrub a small area and then carefully spray clean water with a spray bottle, when it ran down I wiped it up with a small rag.
I removed the large blown speaker, I may change the radio out for a working one or run a delete plate, not sure yet. There is a small area behind it that still needs detailing, I will get that when I remove the radio. Also there are two holes right in front of the speaker, a screw is still in one hole, a push button was mounted I would guess for an accessory horn. I think the horn was mounted on the right fender well, as there are three holes there. Not sure what to do with them yet, maybe small bolts with washers??
Also, I used a long air nozzle to blow out the front fender well behind the door hinges, lots of redish brown dirt in both, there are two service stickers in the door jam from north eastern Oregon, makes sense...coming along nicely. |

OK, on to some really good stuff. I hated looking at those ugly white powder coated wheels since I bought the car, blinding white, they have the deepest pitting I have ever seen on any early VW wheels. The car came with one of the origonal wheels as a spare, it was in great shape, I scrounged up four more good wheels and got to work.
I straightened all the hubcap clips and cheched them for integrity, if they looked marginal they were remmoved, in total I put on 9 clips. I then used an angle grinder and flap wheel to clean up the outer rim inside and out, followed by a Scotch brite pad until all the tire seating areas looked like chrome and sent them to the blaster. I have painted a few sets of VW wheels over the years, but not having a place to do it now, I went a local buddies and got busy. The wheels were painted on a dirt floor in a shop, paint booth...HA, who needs a paint booth.
The car came with blue white rim and black center factory, nothing wrong with that, I just wanted something abit different. I had some single stage mixed up in bahama blue for the center, and a custon blue green for the rest. It is hard to get the true color to photograph well, they look turquoise but have alot of grayish green in person. On a side note, the bluish grey of the primer would make a great color for a bug or bus. |

Waited three days after painting the wheels to have the tires mounted, they came out great, no chips or rash from the tire machine. What a differance from the white wheels. As I mentioned earlier, there insn't anything wrong with the factory wheel colors, I just wanted a different combo. The dark outer green is close to the color of the door panels and that is what I was going for, the color combo gives the car a more vintage look.
I took the bug camping on Labor day, shot a couple of pics, some local members may recognize the spots. Cleaned up a vintae license plate frame from the long gone local VW dealer. I remember driving by as a kid looking at all the new bugs and busses, never thought they would become a disease/obsession later in life...it is good...more to come. |

I have wanted to put in a block off plate in since I got the bug, finally scored an original paint one as well as a clean grab handle here from the classifieds for REASONABLE prices. I removed the glove box again to make removal of the radio and installation of the grab handle easier. I also had to clean and detail the area below the radio as I couldn't get good access with it in. With the radio out you can see the discoloration from years of cleaning the dash with whatever chemicals, did my best to remove and detail, not perfect but better. I cleaned the handle as well, it looks great with that vintage patina. What a difference, clean and that all business look.
