Thanks, yes I'm driving it, 18 thousand since I bought it, still running strong and giving back to it's current caretaker Smile

Here are a couple shots from today...drive and enjoy them!

Fantastic job of preservation !! Hopefully this kind of work inspires others. I can only wish that those who are lucky to own a true survivor understand the value of originality.

My '64 Bahama Blue has similar numbers that look like they were put on with magic marker...are they factory?

Agreed! I got lucky several times and one was a '65 Bahama Blue bug with a rather unique story and provenance. While a "US spec" car, it came with the fuel reserve tap and Windsor fabric interior (non-US spec items). It also has a rear speaker with fader rheostat, A/C, VDO oil temperature gauge and the original Florida licence plate registered to it in 1965. It's still all 6v and has under 12k miles. Love stories of folks finding original, unbastardized cars and preserving them. If one changes anything, like beams, wheels, engines, etc. they are well advised to keep the original parts. That often translates into a little more coin on the selling side for those who appreciate originality Wink

"Magic Markers" didn't exist in 1965 ...so, if it looks like magic marker, then the numbers are likely not original. Maybe someone 'replaced' the original crayon or paint-marker numbers after the originals got painted over? My original paint 66 has similar markings ...I'll post photos later ....and I've read here on the forum that they are production line markers, that likely only the workers understand.

it always has amazed me at how people can two tone wheels. Any tricks on how to do it so they turn out nice? What do you use to mask off the center while shooting the hoop color?

Thanks

When I did the ones on my 66 I painted the outer hoops white, then once they dried I stuck index cards in the split where the hoop meets the center to mask it off. Then I painted the centers black.

I used file folder cardboard ... less fussy to deal with than file cards, and you can do all four wheels with only 3 or 4 legal size manila file folders.

I don't imagine what you use really matters that much, I just happened to have index cards laying around at the time. The important part is that it'll create a physical barrier and stay put while you're painting.

You're right ...of course ANY thin cardboard from ANY source will do. I mentioned the file folders because that cardboard is about the same thickness as file cards. I also used tin foil on a set of wheels ....I put double-sided scotch tape on the edge that slips down into the narrow gap (make sure the paint on the hub section is THOROUGHLY cured) ...and then was able to shape the tin foil to cover the entire center section to eliminate the possibility of over-spray.

I used a pad of small post-its when I did mine. The are flexible but stay in place while you mask of the rest of the wheel.

Post its are a great idea! It never fails, it'll be totally still out until you're ready to spray then a gust of wind will magically appear and blow the cards over!
