Christian, awesome work all over !
your engine data is misleading I think.
case casting date of 24th of February 3rd shift in 1955 totally fits the early post BD 55 production and og engine number. the stamping in the og place looks totally original to me.
Whats misleading is the 'Austausch' stamp below it and the number to the side of the gen stand. the 350268 would put it into late 1951 production, maybe used in a 52 BD and they possibly stamped that replacement # ?!?! who knows. the script type of the additional number looks very much like later og VW engine numbers. There is a whole lot of mistery going on around those factory or garage rebuilt 'Austausch' units. some had the og stamped numbers milled off, later engines have those circular arrows stamp indicating a replacement and again others still carry the og engine # like yours along with the squarish Austausch stamp.
anyways, nice motor !

The engine is out of a 53 firetruck, maybe they bought an exchange engine in 55?
I also like this engine very much, i hope a good one to start driving.

Some more little steps the last days:
Found out that the ruber seals from the nos front brake zylinders are dead, so i replaced them.
Some more work on the brake lines, installed the flexible brake lines front and rear and the new brake switch.
Installed the steering absorber.
And the fresh painted front shifter rod and the shifter with a nos shifter plate, what a good feeling to shift that car the first time since i own it!!
The next goal would be driving it out from the shop to get the filler drying in the sun...

Might consider taking the next step, zinc plating at home:

I second this. It is not hard and does not require anything special. Takes a little bit to get good results.

Have you tried simple vinegar (Essig) and water? I did this with my brother-in-law's plates from his '59 single cab, with great results after cleaning up with same 0000 fine steel. I haven't tried CLR yet, but I'm interested to know if you've both and how they compare...wife had vinegar so I opted for that hahaha.

This looks gorgeous by the way. I like the lingering "used" look against the new paint. Wie früher gesagt, echt Hammer geile Arbeit! Sauguad.

I really like this look.

Restored, but not over-restored.

A bit of orange-peel in the paint, just like factory,
and the tags pretty, but showing their age.

Nice point to draw the line. Cool

Mine looks similar. First I tried the old “coke” trick that didn’t work....then I tried extra strong vinegar and that worked well.

I first read now about home zinc plating, i want to try that sometimes!
I send parts to a company for zinc plating times before for my Baywindow, at this Single Cab i don´t want it to shiny, because it was build as a cheap car for hard work on the farm here in austria.

looks good! next time i try vinegar!

some more work done:

Changed the broken cuffs on the nos brake cylinders.
Painted the new brakedrums and some little little parts i blasted this week.
Note: don´t let the fresh painted drum fall on the floor outside...

i found a nos Speedo cable, it looks a little bit different as the one that comes with the car but think it should work, length is the same.

So the rear brake is now ready after the screw for the brakezylinder get broken at 55Nm, thats a lot for a 10.9 M8 i think. It was not easy to get the broken one out, but with a another screw i stopped at 45Nm.

ATE rear brake zylinders, this is what i want when i ordered the „good Quality“ stuff from the online vw shop, thaks PPS.

Christian,

i can't tell from your picture, but ATE, and many OLDer VW mechanics recommend the use of ATE Blue Brake paste for the assembly of all brake cylinders.
see: https://www.ate.de/media/2317/technical_datasheet_brake_cylinder_paste.pdf

I've broken the same bolt before. Pretty sure that torque spec is on the known list of Bentley manual errata.
