I'm soon working on the gearbox on my 56. Is there any advantage to using the OE type boots? (Without the split). Will those currently sold slip over the bells? I realize there are stretchers used on modern vehicles to install them. Don't know if they work for this situation. _________________ Al Brase

there was some discussion thread somewhere. I think the answer is yes, and with hot water they will go where they need to go. _________________ regards

what are your plans for the wheels? leave them as they are? paint them? like stock VW bus wheels? 2-tone? powdercoat them black? _________________ regards

okay i will bite on the tires since i have had the original 6.40x15 bias plies on a 60 crewcab.
I personally LOVE the way bias ply tires ride. You will not get a smoother ride. However, they will squeal around every quick corner you might make. This would be my recommendation for stock motor and any vehicle that is not used all the time. bias plies do wear quicker than radials. Cost is higher for bias plies.
I have also had 185/14s on the bus, works fine
195/75/14s on a bay, works fine
i also had 165/15 Semperits on the front with 195/65/15 Pirellis. That was a spectacular well driving bus (66 westy) with konis front and bilstein rear. Went 130km/h on the autobahn, no wind issues at all, cornered very well, never squealed once. Those tires lasted for ever, i do in fact still have them, for roller wheels. (almost 20 years later) Used them on my beetle, on several buses, kombis, singles, crewcab.
Something like that would be my recommendation for a bus with more HP, one that you drive a LOT.
185/15s or 195/15s on all 4s will fit with stock rims. very close to stock diameter. In the back i like more tire since all the weight is back there, fronts are fine with 165s.
I do recommend tires that have the proper load rating for a vehicle that can weigh 4,000 pounds.
stock 15 rims look best, no doubt, but i do not mind the porsche style rims. Just don't put 14s on... _________________ regards

I want to restore the original wheels and put some original or bigger tires on it, but i don‘t know what would fit good....
Any help would be welcome!!

A good tire size is 195/80 R15. They are big in diameter, and not too wide.
And they are easily available.

Definitely mount "C" or better yet "D" rated stiff sidewall tires, 8 ply if possible! Much safer for your truck. I've got Nexen 8 ply "D" rated 195 R 15" steel-belt radial tires on my '59 Double-Cab, and I also run a set of Firestone bias ply 6.40 by 15" tires on my '59 Double-Door Panel. I'm happy with both, but I'm guessing the radials are stronger and probably a bit safer too.

haha, that is an easy one. Totally wrong year for 'slamming' thick lipped doglegs, flat rear wheel wells. Slam a 65 or so Or even better a 68. maybe a 73 with the type 4 motor? _________________ regards

Been following your progress since the beginning and yet now, as you are finally getting to painting, I couldn't see anything in your picture but(t) the Würth calendars. Hoiz foa da Hüttn! Haha, you're almost there, man! I mean with the paint, not second base, as the Amis say haha. _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz
