Alright, bit of an out there, impractical question, I know!
We've got a 1972 super 'vert, and we've got a 16" canoe. Transportation of said canoe is a bit tricky, using said car...
I'm considering welding some mounts to the support rails, and then building a removable cage/psuedo-roof rack of sorts, and tying down to that and the bumper mounts.
There's also the option of a trailer-hitch T-mount thingy and the front windshield, that I've seen on a few other makes of 'verts around the interwebs...
Any thoughts or suggestions?
(Also, yes, we've considered a small trailer, but we'd reaaaaally rather not!) _________________ I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. That's honesty, not shrouded modesty. No, really. |

if you look at the bumper mounts on my bug, you can see the mounts welded to the bracket to install removable a roof high rack made out of square tubing. There are also some on the front bumper. I can take pics of the rack later if you want. _________________ Rick

That's pretty much exactly what I was hoping to do, a square-tubing rack. When we get home from this camping trip, I think the welder may just be coming out.... _________________ I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. That's honesty, not shrouded modesty. No, really. |

How about a few heavy blankets and a couple ratchet straps? Also run a lanyard tying down the fore and aft of the canoe.

Pull a light weight trailer. May be more practical. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I do not have the front rack but you get the idea and you don't have to tow a trailer
This bug was owned by an oilfield engineer and he hauled equipment with it
so I guess this set up would work for a canoe _________________ Rick

What about a bracket that mounts just to the front and rear bumpers?
Bolt it on when you need. This way you would still have use of the
convertible top.

Hey 60ragtop- I don't think he wants to buy a hardtop just for the canoe...
Second vote for the canoe trailer. There are a ton on the net- and your local CL should produce a single axle utility; MC or PWC trailer you could alter easily for the job. _________________

Yep, doesn't need a buy hardtop for the bumper mounted racks which will work on a vert also. At least I understand what he is asking about as he'd prefer not to tow a trailer
I didn't see a poll to vote

Thanks for all the responses, guys!
We COULD do a trailer, but we'd definitely like the compact-ness of going without...
Right now, the bumper mounts are looking like the way to go! _________________ I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. That's honesty, not shrouded modesty. No, really. |

It definitely helps to see this thing with a useful picture. Even better if you had one on the front. I'd probably go this route too- but my canoe is 17 feet long- and should not be supported so close to its ends. The gunwale load spread is only 5 feet. Hope it works out. _________________

you can always throw a support under the canoe like a 2X6 or a 4X4. |
