Yep, how to make a short story..
Conversion done 1.5 years ago, lately customer as red oil light, call me, make him check oil pressure at a local shop, zero psi, nothing. He then tow his van to my shop.

Remove oi pan and find a spring, some little part part that look like it as a small barrel shape. The screen of the oil pickup as a hole.

Remove valve cover because I know where this spring come from... nop, all 4 spring are there. Think and think for so many ours, remove head and VVT assembly, all fine. Remove engine, check an hidden location between flywheel and block, all is there and fine. Remove timing component and all look fine, put the oil pump on the ground, split engine open, check rod and crank, main bearing, oil passage....

NOTHING

Today I put the block back together...... take the oil pump that was laying on a tarp mating surface of pump on the ground.

Turn the pump to have a last look............. try to turn it by hand.......

Let the slide SHOW begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The VVT assembly you see there is the customer one, all 4 spring are there???????????

There is NO SUCH spring elsewhere in this engine... PERIOD!

I remember this guys, when he left my shop 1.5 years ago he called me after 20 miles or so saying his loosing oil from one valve cover.

I race to the shop and take a spare one in a bag.................. full of VVT assembly/part in pieces.

So I think, well, I'm sure that this valve cover had loose VVT part stuck to it somewhere. They ended up in the oil pan very soon (engine design).

One day, one when up in the oil pick-up screen and with time made a hole and it's way IN the oil pump.

I hope that you have enjoy that story, because not me, I spent (LOST) 35 hours on that stupidity.

Ben

You may have lost the 35hrs of work, but the value of that time is small compared to the marketing goodwill you have gained. Many mechanics would have said too much time had passed and would not have taken responsibility for the problem. Even more people will know that you do good work and that you stand behind that work. Everyone makes mistakes, it's how they are handled that makes the difference. If I needed a subie conversion and restoration, I'd ship my van all the way from California to you.

Bravo!

Off topic: Ben, I remember a post long ago about proper breather tubes or some such on the 2.5. Do you have clearer pictures on an assembled engine so I can check my routing?

2006 + have a strange PVC valve design, some are not operating as they should, nothing major but...

I just made that for you but by your NICE built page you have a pre 2004.
