|
|
Might be time to tell the story of my 1953 smoothgate truck, that found me last year.
I'd been looking for an early truck for 2 decades and after getting a tip from my bus-buddy Valentin I was able to get a look at this July 53 Pritschenwagen, but I had to wait another 7 months until I could finally purchase it. Stefan, the former owner, who is an avid collector of early and rare VWs had it for nearly 20 yrs, but never got to restore it. this is how it looked 2 decades ago:
this is how it lay dormant in a shed
picked it up May '14
there is a sticker on the lid saying 'Dienstkraftwagen' meaning 'staff car'.
It is from a time when the truck was seeing duty in a hospital near Vienna, Austria and it was painted a light grey/off-white at the time.
the truck was delivered by the official Volkswagen dealer center of Salzburg/Austria, Porsche Austria (then owned by Luise Piech, the daughter of Ferdinand Porsche senior)
after I did some research and a little more, I found out that the original first owner of the truck was 'Bestattung Wien', the funeral service of Vienna, and they used it as a flower car.
it is one of the 3 BD SCs in the pic (dating from Dr. Theodor Körner's -Austrian president- funeral from 1957)
During that period the gates got mixed up with recessed 56/57 gates from another single cab they had.
just love the roof peak.
Although it is very solid, it still needs a full restoration.
last week I managed to drop in an engine, rewire the electrics, repair the brakes and finally got to drive it and take it to a local show this weekend.
I respect this truck's history and love driving it, so hopefully will be able to restore the chassis, body and mechanicals to it's former glory within the next years. I will leave the grey paint as is for the moment, maybe strip it back to the funeral gloss black later.
the brandnew factory dove blue is still underneath it all
It will NOT get Earlies and will NOT get slammed, just saying _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Interesting story, congratulations for the truck. looks an easy project to restore or just leave it like this and enjoy it. _________________ 1953 w26 SC (To Restore) x Sale

Awesome to know it was one of the three in the president's funeral procession. That alone would be enough in my eyes to justify restoring it to its condition at that moment in time. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

thanx everybody. I am not so much into hearses and flower cars, but I agree that it would look slick in restored gloss black paint. I think it also looks great as is, telling all the stories in flaking paint. it will need a ground up chassis and lower body restoration to pass Austrian vehicle inspection. it has all the usual rust issues of a BD, although some areas are still very solid.
I will put it in a rotissery and will post pics as I go.
interior has all colors, OG dove blue, dark grey from funeral era and lighter grey from hospital service _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

my new fav thread. I adore singlecabs. This truck is bad ass. While i agree im not much into funeral rigs, the pics of it in its first employment are quite convincing. It would definitely stand out of the crowd done up in the gloss black.
I love dove blue with all my heart but sometimes you need a change.
And "slammed" BD's were played out 5 years ago. Stock height is the new HAF.
could always run the black a few years the remove that and go blue. *shrugs*. all things are possible. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
