I already bought a set of bias ply piecrust Firestones some months before I actually bought the bus ...
yes tall is the new slamn
though stance and wheels might vary in future.
I have been working on the wheels. had a great set of matching (1/54) wheels to start, blasted and primed, but this is the first (in many) sets of wheels I ever did, using filler and sanded smooth to get them ready for gloss black paint !
I am still looking for period correct hubcap clips and rivets, before applying the final paint coat.
concerning the black paint, yes it is still all over the bus. the current grey is also laquer paint, not primer. I like all three of the colors, blue, black and grey. I already tried in some spots and it is possible to get back to either black or dove blue. I will definitely not go to dove blue now. the other paint layers are the best protection for the dove blue, since I plan on driving it a lot. I agree that it looks killer in black. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

the doors still show where the (cast) badges of the funeral service were ( with the Viennese town crest on it). I will get access to a set of these.
Here you can see the layers of paint
I was wondering about the wrong set of (recessed) gates on the truck, when I found some sort of 3 digit inventory number on the inside of each of the 3 gates. It is on top of black paint underneath the grey paint.
It took me some weeks and sudden inspiration to finaly add all my information and I came up with this
check the license plate on this post BD SC. (the pic is from 1957 which also matches the number )

you got your SC paint out very nicely. awesome signwriting and beautiful in dove blue.
In Europe we don't get good paint removers because of environmental reasons. I am working with an alcohol based stuff called color-ex. It is not harmful. it is very effective but needs a long time (up to 24 hours).
I am worried that it would remove the thinner layers and get to the lower paint layers before the thick spots of the paint to be removed will get soft.
I like using a razor blade scraper. have used it to great success on the dash pod. that purple paint had to go !
before
after
speedo is a 54, not correct for a July 53, but will do at the moment.
The removal of the exterior paint will have to wait until all the blasting, welding, grinding is done. the grey paint will protect the other paint layers. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

yes. VDO, the same like 60s Mercedes would have ( W108, W113 230 SL, 250...). probably added in the 60s or 70s. you can see the holes in the dash and windshield center pillar. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Regarding paint removal, Ive used oven cleaner to remove 7 layers of house paint on my 54 to reveal about 80% of the OG paint, it works really well.
I'll be happy to share the info if you'd like to try that option.

Thanx, Andre, Ben and Ian for your help with paint removal. I will come back and ask for your advice when I am ready to start the process!
here's something of minor importance, I did on lazy Sunday afternoon yesterday, repairing the semaphore and interior light wire loom. I have no idea to why, but somebody cut it into 6(!) pieces at some time , although it easily can be removed from the car in one piece. since the wires and looms were all still soft and original to the car including the correct color keys I decided I would repair it properly. No big issue, and another part saved from '53, semaphores should be working soon

It was really nice to see your bus at the 'wet' edition of the Bus Camp Out, it really standed out! Incredibly straight for its age and glad to see that its running!
Oh, and the 'slam' thing is really played out since ages, your bus deserves better!
Cheers, Alex.

mission accomplished. I just love bringing things back to life after 5 decades (in Austria semaphores were obsolete by 1963 and had to be replaced with turn signals in about 1967)
I love how the semaphores are high up in the B posts, when they would be dropped below the beltline on later trucks. anybody knows why they did this change? maybe because they were hard to see with a canopy on or when fully loaded on the tilted upper posts ??? _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

you´re right, they changed the position because they were hard to see with a canopy on.
good luck with the project and best wishes from lower austria |

Man, how cool would it be to show up in full funeral livery?
Black paint buffed up,
emblems on the side,
and a big heap of flowers on board!
Nobody would even look at any of the others...

Hi I love your pickup especially with its history, how did you go about finding the history on it? I am trying to find out the history on a special order bay window i have for restoration that spent all of its life in Vienna. I have some history but i am struggling on the first owner and the company that done the conversion on it (although i know their name), would either of you guys from Austria be able to help or point me to someone that might be able to? cheers Nick _________________
