I'm trying to tidy my engine bay without making big changes (dual carbs, etc) to the engine. I'm going to move the battery to under the back seat and I'm thinking of replacing the oil bath air cleaner with a flat dry aircleaner. The flat aircleaner has to go on top of my standard Solex carb.

My questions: Is this do-able? If so, which aircleaner would fit? My car is a '68 coupe without the inbuilt rain-drain in the rear decklid (not the thicker one that is standard on later models).

(I'm going for a clean look engine bay and will (temporarily) remove the battery hold-down clamp and the air cleaner stand.)

Thanks.

My ghia has a flat air cleaner on top of the carb. It fits fin, but I have no rain catch.

Hope it helps.

On my Ghia, the oil breather hose connects to the oil bath air cleaner. Have you given an idea as to how you plan on venting your engine case?

Okay, you' ve got me there. So it's more complicated than I thought. Any solution? Thanks for responding. I might have made a fool (or a bigger one than I already am) of myself there.

I think they did different things for different years, or even the markets they were selling in. Just check how its done on your car now.

Most aftermarket air cleaners for stock Solex carbs have a provision for the crankcase breather hose. See this one for example:

I fitted an aftermarket air cleaner to my old Beetle, it never ran as well as the original oil-bath type. The pancakes may look good but...

When I first bought my Ghia it had a K&N filter on it. It didn't run as smooth as I thought it should so I hooked the original oil bath filter back up. Once the oil bath was back in it ran great! (The plastic fuel filter has since been relocated)

Thanks guys, Woreign has shown me how to do it. Thanks for the other contributions.

I think this thread is now closed.
