My buddy lent me his stash of 4GA wire and connectors / crimping tool for the day.

I won't be able to climb under the van to measure / install any connections so I'm hoping someone can tell me what lengths are needed for the following 2 connections:

1. Alternator to Starter lug.

2. Transmission to Ground.

Any others I should be concerned with ? I just replaced my battery to starter cable.

I haven't had a chance to peek around much under there but I thought i should take advantage of the wire offer while I can.

Thanks in advance.

Do some crawling to determine how much wire you'll need.
It isn't a big deal--take a tape down under with you and see what you can see.
The alternator wire is up top--no crawling required.

1. I would suggest this to fix up all the associated alternator wiring: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1648432 but the Alt-to-starter portion for my '85 4 speed measures 29.5" from eyelet tip to tip.
2. Couldn't get under to measure but looking at it is around 8". 10" would be lots. Again, on '85 4 speed.

Auto looks to be about the same size:

One thing some do is run a ground from a starter mound bolt to the chassis to get a direct ground on the starter, rather than through the transmission. I can't comment but for some samba gurus this is regular practice with a new van and eliminates bad grounds as a source for slow starting.

Thanks for sharing. I was just not in a position to climb under the van before I have to return the wiring. Cheers !

Here's where I put that one (that's the right front corner of the engine bay):

Good time to check the ground from the engine to just under the coil. Mine was a braided cable that had turned green & powdery with age, replaced with a ready-made ground cable from the FLAPS.

Sorry, no idea on the lengths at this point in time.

Great, thanks. The PO had also done a similar cable there.
