A friend of mine bought a Fasty, and had me and another friend go get it for him. So we did. When we did, I found the nastiest fastback I have ever seen in my life. In this backyard since forever, and under the nastiest trees ever.

A long winch cable, some swapped wheels, and the Fasty rolled free. Yikes.

Anywhoo, we loaded it up, and delivered it to his house! I offer to buy it on the spot, before it comes off the trailer. He says no, because hes going to part it out to convert his auto square to manual. Im pretty dissapointed, because its honestly a pretty clean car. Good pans, good rockers, etc. Very very oddly, the metal around the engine (the deck) is completely gone. Nothing else, just that area is rusted. Weird. Oh well, its a parts car now.

But Kirk! How does this involve you?! I thought you had a new car! Keep reading. So he washes it, and sends me pics.

A few weeks later, he offers it to me for sale! Says he has too much at the moment, and instead of parting it out, he wanted me to have the option to buy it for what it cost him. I readily agree. Back we go! Save another!

And now I own a fasty. On the way home, I find a buddy has a non beat up late type3 hood for nearly free. Nabbed it as this one doesnt close anymore.

Yellow doesnt match, and I dont like that. Hmm. Mines just so bad!

It definitely stinks and is covered underneath and inside by some cottony mess where it came from. The nose is punched, Oh and the passenger door is frozen on the bottom hinge and the top one is broken. Yikes. Last registered in 1986, when she was but 13 years old. Weird.

So the first thing we do is swap the hood. Doesn't match but it closes! (Not closed here)

You can see the door is hanging in that pic. While the hoods off we clean it out!

Might as well vacuum the interior too and scrap that junk out.

I can't clean the other side so...

Now I can! Yeah this is broken. I bet we spent 45 minutes trying to coax that door open. Squirt. Wiggle. Squirt. Wiggle. ITS BREAKING! No its not. Squirt, wiggle squirt, wiggle. Repeat. Finally it opened! Those door screws were a PITA to beat out.

Through magic goop of Parker's and some continual work the top hinge starts swinging! Bottom was stifffffffff. Gotta undo the fender to get to the back side....

Grinding and Cleaning continue! My friend Parker the automotive wiz runs the grinder, and dummer, slower me runs the vaccum.

Were type3s made of better interior materials? (Kidding) I swear the type 3s i find are not nearly as shot out as their beetle counterparts. Its as if they were better cared for or better something. So odd.

We wrecked his driveway tho. After much much much much more hinge work, and 15 minutes of alignment, both hinge and door:

All in all it's a clean little car. (We cleaned the glass too. That helps.) The engine surround metal is rusty but nothing else on the car is. Pans rockers etc all great. Weirdest thing. Bolted up some non flat rollers.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Parker decided we should see if he ran. Fantastic idea! Let's pull the back seat and take alook. Under the seat was the worlds oldest car battery. So using the might of a ford truck and some jumper cables we attempted to turn it over. Nada like nada.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Yes I have jackstands. Got underneath to verify the starter wiring. Looked janky, so I replaced a spade and tightened stuff up. Still wont spin. Beat on it. That’s better! So I climb out and Parker and I disassemble the distributor, fiddle with points, swap condensors, nothing seems to work. Check the plugs, coil, nothing! As self doubt begins to creep in, we swap points to a new set and set them. He goes to start the car again, and I lay my hand on the plenum while pulling a wire off to test. That would prove to be a bad idea as I immediately get the sh*t shocked out of me. Yowzer. Guess we have power now. Crank crank nothing. Starterfluid aint doing it, but now it wont crank again! BFH to the rescue! I beat he cranks.

It is about this time, Parker is enveloped in the black smoke monster from Lost as this beast fires to life running on starter fluid, half eaten pecans, rust flakes and rat pellets. Belching its displeasure, it pops once and dies. Parker, alternating between celebrating and coughing, suggests we try it again. He goes to the front to crank, and I go to the rear to spray. Nothing. Starter dead again. I climb under from the rear (Bad Idea) and whack the starter about the time he cranks the key. Boom! Fires off again! This time Kirk had been scootching out from under it about the time it decided to shower me in rat turds, rust and pecans from the rotted out header. Literally, I began to yell but all pleas of help were drown out by a Volkswagen trying to come to life after a (literal) 28 year nap. (Last tagged in 1986) After a brief moment, the car dies, Parker celebrates, and I climb out coughing. Parker takes one look at me and hands over the air hose. Success! He runs! Before lowering him down, I swapped the starter with a used unit Parker had laying around.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now I roll the car forward and begin to sweep up all the crap that fell out of the car. Its gonna need more work before it runs on its own, that’s for sure. Fuel pump is bad, tank is probably junk, and fuel lines are old. Fuel injection is coming off and Im going with carbs. Oddly, the fuel injection on this car is complete unlike how my square was.

Time to polish! I love to bring them back. First, my weapons:

So I didn't have buffer pads so I did it by hand, one panel at a time. Wash car, rubbing compound, wax. It will need it again but this is a good start. How about I let pics tell it?

Yes, they were made with better materials, and were better cared for (well most of them were). Cool The type 3 was afterall an upgrade for the beetle owner. Wink

Not really rare, just not seen that often. The under dash AC unit is more rare. Wink

Scored a hood today in the right, "Texas Yellow!" Had to do some research with my data assistant Parker from afar, but I believe this to be the right color!
