I have an oil pressure gauge in my vanagon w sending unit & switch mounted to tin under push rods.

Was changing coolant, so pulled tin & left sender hanging. After draining coolant, disconnected .3 switch wire (to gauge cluster) to wipe coolant off and forgot to plug it back in.
Went driving & oil pressure light starts flickering - go home & find dangling .3 wire with just the connector resting on exhaust - plastic guard around connector had melted - no breaks in wire... no exposed wire. Plugged it back in. Went driving - oil pressure light still blinks.

I know i have good oil pressure, as my gauge still functions correctly (50psi above 3000rpm, 18psi at idle).
Changed out .3 wire all the way to connector in engine bay & went driving... still blinks.

Tested dynamic oil pressure system per bentley:
engine not running/ignition on - LED flashes - Yes.
engine <2000rpm/.3 wire grounded - LED flashes - Yes.
engine >2000rpm/.9 wire unhooked - LED flashes + buzzer - Yes.
Everything checks out.

Did .3 switch go bad? Can driving w/o .3 switch wire plugged in mess up the switch?

Nevermind... i pulled a .3 switch from a spare engine and that did the trick.
I mean seriously... i drove the van for 5 mins without the wire plugged in and it fails??? WTF!

So don't look at your oil switches funny or they'll fail! Rolling Eyes

Actually the oil pressure switches are typically robust and running with the wire disconnected should not affect them. I think you just ran into an astronomically improbably coincidence.
