|
|
New issue with my Westy this weekend. It is having difficulty finding the gears when the engine is running and
not a problem when the engine is not running. I am thinking my clutch is on its way out but could it be another
component that has failed or is failing.
I have read thru the threads on clutch chatter, clutch slave range of motion and shift linkage. Does anyone have
a suggestion as to what and where to look first as in a step by step process? I would like to eliminate some things
in order to get to the real problem, I think this would keep costs down!
Things that I have already looked at: Clutch slave motion, it moves about 3/4" and not the 2" as stated in other
threads. It is not leaking and the res. is full of brake fluid.
A garage can replace a whole bunch of parts that don't need replacing, right?
BTW 87 Westy 4 speed. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Tim,
Seems to have the symptoms of a failing clutch master cylinder, but check the pivot pin before you look at replacing it. Those pins can wear with time, and range of travel is reduced.

Possible fail one of the clutch cylinders, pilot bearing in the mainshaft, broken arms of the clutch shaft, loose bolt of the cylinder holder on the gearbox.
For the cylinders take another person that put the clutch and look at the gearbox if the clutch shaft arm is moving about 1cm. |

Tim,
I put a tubeless aluminum mag bolt on valve stem onto a SPARE brake master cylinder cap and with 2-4psi it moved the brake fluid very nicely when I replaced both my clutch master & slave cylinders.
I'd left the bleeder screw out the whole previous night and nadda.. so a little positive force got it moving along..
I don't prefer the vac bleeders as they can create false air bubbles pulling air past the cups/seals in the slave/wheel cylinders. _________________

Went thru something like this last summer.
Was the throw-out bearing. Seized, then threw metal chunks about.
While trans was out, I rebuilt the shift fork, and replaced bushings.
Shift for was very stiff.
(Clutch slave turned out to be fine... also did the bleed thing first, checked travel etc. travel was not much, but I think that had to do with the bellhousing internals being so wiped out) _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

Hi Tim, I'm betting on a bad pilot bearing. Not a bad job at all. Drop it by! I'll swap it out in an hour or 2.

Wish you and I lived closer to one another and I would!! I am about ready to call a garage and make an appointment.
Should I also have them put in a new clutch kit? What is reasonable in terms of time for a competent garage to do this
repair?
Oh and I think you are probably correct from what I have been reading!! Hopefully I can get this sorted out before

I charge 5 hours for the whole job, includes a main seal, Oring in the flywheel, and a clutch kit replacement. It's a good idea to replace it all while you're in there.

Appointment has been made for Thursday and possible pickup on Friday.
I took out the clutch slave's retaining bolts yesterday, well I cut them out and replaced them with SS bolts
and nuts. I would have thought that the cylinder would have just slid out of the bracket once the bolts were
out of the way but it didn't? Is the cylinders piston attached to the clutch arm on the transaxle? How does
it come off if so? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

The Westy is back in the driveway and all fixed! It eneded up being a bad clutch. The clutch had started to come
apart and everything else that was to be replaced got replaced, so I should be good to go for a while. One thing
that I hadn't considered replacing was the metal coolant pipe on the left side of the engine. When they dropped the
transaxle I think that it put some stress on the two smaller lines coming off that pipe and they cracked open. So,
that had to be replaced also.
Going to go camping this coming weekend as a shake down trip before Transporter Fest on Columbus Day weekend. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro
