Since the Bays didn't come with an upright DP motor with the oil cooler exit in
the front engine tin what is everyone using for this front tin?
I'm putting a DP in my '70 Westy and not sure what to use here or whether to
cut a hole in my original tin for the oil cooler exit. |

Cutting the hole in your present tin is best value, 71 front tins are available but kinda spendy when you can find them. But they are around. |

1971 was the only year that had the hole. As said, best bet would be to cut your own hole in a 1968-1970 tin. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Or weld shoulders on a Beetle tin. _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

I almost did exactly this. As mentioned, the 71 dual port front bus tin is one year only. I searched for it recently and found 1-2 but didn't want to drop a $100 on it. My 70 front tin already had the hole cut it in so I just used it. As mentioned, you could find a dual port front tin from a bug and drill out several spot welds on your bus tin then spot weld it to the bug tin. It looks like they just added an extra metal shoulder on bug front tins anyway. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Recently took care of this myself. I found a 1971-specific, doghouse tin here in the classifieds. Not sure what the hole is pictured below, but I ended up plugging it.
Here's a before/after. Gap finally closed up correctly. It was a good exercise since I got around to replacing my fuel vent lines and filler hose too.
