Trying to understand how the circuits switch between high and low beams.

Is it done through the headlight relay?

When I trigger the turn signal mounted button for the high beams they illuminate as long as I hold the button but return to low beams as soon as it's released.
So, in other words, all lights are functioning normal with the exception of staying on high beam when the dimmer button is released

Sounds like you have the wrong relay.

You may have the flash to pass relay rather than the dimmer relay..

Check the terminal designations on your relay

Four terminals 56 56a F S

Cool

That might be the easiest " fix "...
.and if it isn't that's one more part not to worry about in the build

Check the wiring of the relay. The relay is wired on Euro models to light up the high beams while the button is held down. This is the "flash to pass" function. US models are typically not wired this way. Yours may be miswired, or defective. Euro replacement relays can be wired either way.

This looks like the US relay (no terminal 30).

try bypassing the relay by jumping the black/white wire to the yellow wire and then the white wire. Turn the headlights on. The low (yellow) or high (white) beams should be on. If they are, then your relay is the problem.

If the headlights cycle from low to high when the dimmer is pressed, but the relay doesnt "Latch" to high...and falls back to low... and if the wiring is correct and the relay is correct..

Its a bad relay..

That's exactly what they are doing. Thanks...that was the answer I was looking for.
I have been using the wiring schematic from Bentley and it's the original wiring in good condition.
I was trying to understand what "latched" the high beams on
I appreciate all the help from everyone...I knew the good folks of The Samba would have been through this before.
