I just picked this up. Not sure what my plan for it is yet. Kind of an impulse buy. Definitely need some wide wheels & tires for the back & lower it pretty good. Then have some fun with it. I'd like to do a beam extender but time will tell how far I go with it.

Exactly^... cause looks like somebody already drove the fenders off.
Looks kinda nice to start cutting it up and extending the front.... past the point of no return...

That's going to be my biggest issue. It is a very clean car from California. But my alternative is to find some rusty pc. that needs pans, heater channels etc. to start with. I don't want a big project which is why I bought this. I do have hesitations about cutting though. _________________ Mic

Hey MMW
I have the exact same problem....I find something decent and dont wanna hack it up and then I find something rotten and dont wanna huge project...I have been looking at these projects since July 2014 and still cant seem to find the magical one I want...
Everybody says oh just hack it up and drive it....you go hack something nice up and suddenly the value goes down the tubes...yours looks nice and clean...
thanks for posting pictures...

I only say cut it, not as a wise ass but in the honest truth. If you are concerned about resale later, start with a different car. If you want everyone to agree start a different post, You have what looks to be a decent ride, Bigger tires on rear, smaller on front & have fun. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

This car has a non-adjustable JT aluminum beam. In searching for adjusters for it I have read these are not strong enough for the added weight of a car & are really for tube frame buggies. Any thoughts?
It already has dropped spindles & disc brakes up front. _________________ Mic

Question - this shifter came with the car & I was told it was in it. It now has a stock shifter. I don't see how it would fit with the extra cone on it. Should there be a spacer plate under the cup/cap? Maybe some sort of short throw set up? The extra cone is plastic & just floats on top of the steel cone. (I know it is a cobbled together shifter that has been extended.)

Looks cobbled together. As far as your aluminum beam goes, They are great for buggies & lighter cars, list it on here & use the funds for the next front end. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Thats a homeade quick shift
And yes there would have been a lower base spacer between the tunnel and bracket of some sort..
I've even witnessed a wooden block as a spacer..

Yes I read that one. One of the reasons I am going to change it out. I also realized yesterday that it is super stiff up front. It does have gas shocks so they have to go also. I can stand on the front nerf bar (170#) & barely get it to move so I need to pull it apart anyway to see what's up with that.
I plan to go one outer spline on the back plus an adjustable front beam & see how that looks. I don't want to slam it, just low but drivable. My other car is 2.75" from the ground it's about as low as I can go without it being un-drivable.
Thanks for the suggestions. Tim, I really like your car. Is there a thread on it somewhere? _________________ Mic

Yep, gas shocks on the front of a VW are very stiff. Some hydraulic shock will ride a lot better. I have some pics on the volksrod.com forum under Timbo. http://volksrods.com/forum/album.php?albumid=59 _________________ ()o\|/o() |

I picked up a used beam to replace the aluminum one. When putting in adjusters do I need to remove the bump stops & cut off the metal arms that hold them? _________________ Mic

Cut the entire stop and arm off... and you will need shorter shocks. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Thanks, that's what I thought after looking at it. I already figured on shorter shocks. _________________ Mic

I know I'm ahead of myself here but if I cut for an 8" beam extender will I be able to leave the little shelf where the brake reservoir is & the stock gas tank location?
I am hoping to have it all figured out if I ever get the time to do it. Most of my searching has come up with "just cut until it fits" or most pics seem to have almost all of the front just cut off. _________________ Mic
