Yes, to me this is likely Prototype E. From p1 (the top bus):

Prototype E, top (say a Kombi - two tone paint - no interior panels - dark colour through middle) |
^^Good detailed pic. Seats are ugly. Middle seat looks like 2 beetle seats strapped together?!
v Prototype F's middle seat looks refined, and has the recognisable Barndoor 4-pleat/repeat pattern.

I guess this suggests the Standard (F) was built after the Kombi (E).
Logical.
F's cab door panel has a pleat in it.
No rubber kick mat on the btm of the cargo door panel.
Best pic of the steering wheel/dash pod yet, too (F)
Could it have used the small diameter beetle steering wheel?

A couple more of B1
^Exterior mirror is a recognisable Barndoor design
^Door cards. No cargo door strap
^Curved & ribbed accelerator pedal

Plattenwagen example looks to have a very similar seat
Probably would provide clues to the steering/dash/pedals too
Decklid brakelight matches D
Anyone have better Plattenwagen pictures? _________________ -StockRocks- |

The Plattenwagen seems to have an early standard 3 spoke beetle steering wheel (slightly convex shape of ring).it also seems to have a kdf style speedo. the Barndoor prototype above has what can easily be identified as the concave style steering wheel rim, like later Barndoors would have, but the hub and horn diameter is bigger than on a stnadard beetle ( which later would also have that concave shape). Petri made steering wheels for so many German cars. I have a Petri banjo steering wheel of unknown origin and it has exactly the same concave shape of the rim like later Bds have and the elongated indentions on the back of the rib. it is somewhat smaller then a BD wheel, but bigger than a beetle.
What I am saying, it is very possible that the prototypes had some kind of steering wheel that Petri produced, non BD specific. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

exactly that one ! my rim is 425mm outer diam and the hub is approx. 103mm ( it will neither take a small standard beetle horn , nor a larger split or BD button. but it takes another all white bakelite Petri horn button I have, that came from a truck size bus).
it takes a small diameter splined steering shaft, much like a 60s beetle. to me, the feel and shape of the rim is the same as a BD. I love those concave steering wheel shapes for the thumb and the 2 finger wide ribs on the back. it is just one of those things that gets me stoked on Barndoors. post 55 steering wheels flex and feel like **** compared to that IMHO _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

just look at the flimsy design of the engine lid, compared to the production one. licence plate recess seems to be torch welded in. recess lines are uneven
the design of the compartment and rear panel is already flawless and what would become production. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

D has 4 clear roof joins, so a 5-piece roof
No discernible gutter/gutter pattern either, unlike all the other Prototypes
Can see the forward outrigger shape...
Stating the obvious, but it has to be the first Prototype
Plattenwagen, just noticed the semaphores and wiper motor
You'd have thought the barndoor would have received a version of its glovebox!
Yes, the BD steering wheel is ace. And the Prototype version is handsome too
Johnny D my boy, please post up some more of the information you hold. _________________ -StockRocks- |

Can we assume that all the Prototypes have 6 vertical louvres? |

sorry, i can´t. i was told to keep it for me, but it helps to make my bus allmost correct.
but maybe time will help us and i´m allowed to share some pics. otherwise, maybe vw or someone else who is also holding informations are willing to share some informations sooner or later. i guess we just have to keep this thread alive! _________________ GermanRestoKommando

Sorry, not one Prototype, but curiously the front emblem screwed from outside and the finger pull on the sliding glass - with butterfly latch - are visible

Thanks RockStock for starting this thread. It was time we had all the prototype info in one place. I hope it will become just as informative as the VW38 tread was for the '38 series beetles.
Here is my contribution. Nice, crisp, detailed shot of three buses together. The light on dark panel, dark on light window bus and the light coloured Delicatessen panel. Going by the checkered floor tiles it is the same place - Wolfsburg? Is it the same time though? Could possibly be. Nice lineup for the press.

Superb Undis - best picture yet!
From L to R: B1, E, G
So it's a pinstripe on G...I thought it was trim
Be nice to see a colour pic of G...my imagination is saying the pinstripe/bumper rib/wheel inner/badge/headlight rim colour is Copper Red, like the Light Beige 53/55 beetle combo
