PostPosted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 3:11 pm    Post subject: Auto Oil Pump Question Reply with quote

I have a 1600dp engine that i am trying to put in my Manual transmission beetle. The motor came out of a auto. So it has the auto transmission oil pump in it. My question is, can i use that oil pump and just link the two lines together that i assume are a feed and return for the auto tranny? That would create a loop. I thought of even maybe linking them to a oil cooler for a little more protection. Am i way off on this? Please go easy i a newbie with these bugs. THanks

Lets just keep it simple. Used or even new oil pumps do not cost that much. Just replace your auto oil pump with a standard unit and call it a day.

Yeah !!!

Sell your used auto-pump to someone who really needs one.

Do beware of any oil pumps sold as "heavy duty", those at best should be used on worn out engines that need more flow to get enough oil pressure. With a tight engine it results in too high of oil pressure and the oil system then works like the engine is cold, so oil does not thru the oil cooler even when engine is plenty hot....

consider an oil pump/filter combination, like the CB Performance Maxi2 I've used in my 1835 engine for over three decades.

Just make sure that the Maxi2 will clear the muffler you use. Have cut, angled down, welded, and redrilled the neck of those to work with any muffler. Greatly helps to keep bearings like new, by getting out all the crud in the oil.

Clears on mine (single Quiet exhaust), so primarily what I care about - have to be selfish sometimes !!!

Cusser,

Are you an old fart or what? I bet that 99% of the people on this forum didn't know that CBs was originally Claude's Buggies. However, back in those days, you really had to watch out for the quality of their parts. How times have changed, now their parts are as good or better then other parts available. Farmersville is about a 30 minute drive for me.

Yeah, I be an old fart, bought my 1970 VW back in 1972, do the math.

For my 1835cc DP engine built from a 1600cc SP in 1976, I bought the single Weber 40DCNF, the DP intake manifold for it, the German 009 distributor, and the Quiet exhaust for it all from Claude's Buggies. The Weber has never been rebuilt, but did get a replacement accelerator pump. The German 009 still works fine. The exhaust was caught on a parking block by Mrs. Cusser and broken so had to replace that. The Maxi2 oil pump/filter was purchased a few years later, so I could get my external oil filter (with external cooler) out of the engine compartment, too crowded and messy (used the aluminum foil method when changing filters).

I just installed one these in my duel port engine. In the CB ad it says up to '75 engines & mine is circa 1977 but I bought it anyway. Installed it without removing the stock muffler.

My guess is you mean your semi auto or auto stick. Which isn't a fully automatic. I mention this because my beetle is fully automatic. Not exactly factory. lol
