Nice job Micah.....you'll have a better appreciation for your car than others due to the hard work you've put into it. Keep it up.

Micah's dad writing this; We have been having some intermittent problems starting the Golf. It would crank but not start, usually on cold or damp days. Warm days it started fine. Today it would not start. Checking the codes, none were set, no CEL or anything. After reading the forums we determined it must be the crankshaft position sensor. Replaced the CPS with the same results. Decided after reviewing the forums, to get out the Haynes manual and start the diagnostic trouble checks. I am of the old school and the electronics are a challenge for me. However I do know an internal combustion engine need three items to run, Fuel, Air and Ignition. First thing to check was fuel, we had half a tank. Next was fuel pressure, that checked good. We then proceeded to verify the fuel injectors were getting power with ignition on during the crank cycle. Using a test light we connected it across the terminals of one of the fuel injection nozzle plugs. The light illuminated during cranking. At this point we were convinced it was not a fuel problem. Next was ignition. We removed one of the electrical plugs from the coil packs (#2). Checked for power on pins one and two. The test light illuminated. Next was to check for actual spark. We were very fortunate to have an extra coil pack, which we connected. With a spark plug inserted and grounded to the valve cover, I had Micah crank the engine. Wow, we had spark. The last items on the list to check were MAF sensor, Air Temp Sensor, and Coolant Temp Sensor. Disconnected the MAF electrical plug, upon examination of the connector, it appeared to need cleaning. Cleaned the connector and then treated it with dielectric grease. Reinstalled the connector and started the car. Wow it is alive.

Thanks to everyone on the forums for insisting we do diagnostic testing. I expected it to be much harder than it was. The diagnostic testing was actually fun and rewarding. Each step you knew one item was eliminated as the culprit. In the end we could have saved lots of anguish and time and money had we started with the basics.

Posting this to encourage others to spend time doing the diagnostic versus just guessing what the problem is.
