New wheels and tires.
Would like to extend roll cage so that it attaches to rear cage.
A new air filter (want a bigger one...all the after market stock ones are very small).
But winter is my main driving time so will be a daily driver again. |

Is there some place to find the local shows? I could have had my Mini-T there, Monroe is only 15 miles away. _________________

They don't seem to advertise this one except on Facebook which I don't really do.
Mario always lets me know when this one comes up.
Local Shows are
Springmeet in April
Burgermeet in Mid july
GCVWS about the 3rd week of August
Octobugfest the first weekend of November
There are spring and fall Triple X BurgerMeets too but I never make those due to crappy weather. _________________

I will have made a roll cage to fit under the hardtop which i will finish afterwards. I will fit a rear window glass and see to make a nice interieur of the hardtop.
And i have to fix the gearbox oilleak which came up lately. Not enough time to ride it i guess.... _________________ '73 Beach Buggy

Hopefully I'll get to work on the fiberglass Allied 20-2 body I just got. I feel like I bought a basket case with this buggy, but luckily I'm all the way down to the bare pan. Time to rebuild from the ground up _________________ 1974 Westfalia tin top (sold)

A quick reminder to those who posted that we are closing in on the halfway point of winter.
Since I have had surgery on my elbow, all non-essential tinkering and fabrication has stopped for the time being, so my "winter upgrade" list will now be a "spring upgrade" list. However, this hasnt stopped me from sitting next to my woodstove in the garage doing some "bench racing" and it's distant cousin "bench fabrication" while staring at my dormant buggy.
The rest of you from northern seasonal driving environments have no excuse. Fire up the shop heater and get to work, you want to drive it all summer and not work on it, right? |

I have been very busy. Just completed another chassis for Loretta, Brian's early Manx. About to start the glass work of re-attaching the doors and restoring the battery and tire wells.
Received in a bunch of parts for upgrades on the Puzzle Manx.
Have two people interested in the Viper once it is done.
Just had a guy stop by and wants me to fabricate a custom hitch for his Bay Window bus so he can pull a Tear Drop across the US and back about the same time we will be on the ECVW '15 trip. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

There is no "season" for you, is there Joe?
I've only been doing some light maintenance on my AMC and my Vanagon. I dont think shopping on the internet for buggy parts counts for much in the way of progress. I will get my snorkel airbox setup done before I do much driving this summer, anything beyond that will be a bonus. |

We haven't had much of a winter here in NorCal, with not a drop of rain in January and plenty of warm days. I've slowly accumulated some parts and will get after a few minor upgrades soon. Here's what I have lined up in the near term:
1) Install new SVDA distributor and billet hold down clamp.
2) New air cleaner to replace tiny round unit.
3) Install alloy plug wire separators
4) Install alloy surfboard rearview mirror (Christmas gift from my wife) to replace cheap plastic model.
5) Fabricate surfboard rack using alloy sideview mirror clamps.
I've been luck to get out for at least a quick ride at least once a week for the last few months, and even snuck a few in during our wet December. It's been a good year to get my first buggy on the road. |

Andy, Start a thread when you do your board rack. We'll be waiting to see Kirk's SUP on there.

I have a list of things to do...
Wiring upgrade again......For the fifth or sixth time. I always seem to find a better way to do something I have already done.....
Going to install new main power and ground wires from rear to front.
Turbo upgrade to MHI TDO4L-13T
Intercooler addition.
Upgrade heads to 40x35mm.....more of a wish but it might be possible.
Wire up launch control
ECU controlled Water Injection
ECU controlled boost control
Install 2 lb residual valve for rear discs that I just installed.
Possible re-plumb of my fuel tank to pump setup.
That should keep me busy for the winter...... |
I started to chip away at my list of winter upgrades.
I managed to get the new turbo installed and tested in the last two weeks plus I even drove it last week for 100 plus miles to work and back in the cold clear weather we had.
It is now back to rain so I pulled the battery power and got all the front electrical unhooked and the fuel tank pulled. That took about an hour to do.
Tonight I'll get the seats out, the body unbolted, unhook the boost hose to the front, pull the license plate wires and the body will be ready to pull.
This should take no more than one more hour.
I used to be able to have the body ready to lift off in one hour but with the EFI it now takes and extra hour to unhook the wiring for that.
I need to pull the engine because I have a set of brand new DRD 40X37.5mm turbo heads to install.........
After the engine is pulled I'll add some more wring to get the Electronic boost controller hooked up and wire up the ECU controlled Water Injection too.

Clonebug,
We've had such a mild winter that I've regretted several times that I pulled the insurance on my buggy. Glad to see you are getting yours out and running it like you stole it.
The more I watch the videos you post the less satisfied I am with my pedestrian powered 1776. Looking forward to seeing your handiwork this spring sometime.
What is different about those heads for a turbo application? I'm curious, and don't have FI or turbo experience yet, so I'm interested in learning more...if/when I build another ACVW motor I'm pretty sure it will be FI or FI with a turbo like yours, |

When talking with DRD he said I would see same or more hp with less boost or more hp with same boost.
I had planned on getting the 40X35.5mm head but he sold me on these entry level turbo heads with 40X37.5mm valve for $30.00 more.
They are Revmaster castings and have larger ports cast in but no porting done. It has the 37.5mm exhaust valve and the exhaust guide has been cut back.
If they do what DRD said they would do that could put me at an easy 200 hp at the crank or more.
I am quite certain that the Iphone dyno run I did is quite conservative due to serious traction issues and a very slow 3.13 second 60 ft launch.
I never posted that video so here it is if anyone wants to watch it.... and these are the Iphone Dyno results that got logged from the run.

Well, ADHD kicked in and I think they became winter 2015/2016 projects.
The Green Viper is now one body with a completed shortened pan.
The Franken Manx is now two pieces, (cut the lengthened piece out)
And the first of January I took on re-building Loretta for buggybrian. Restored both the hacked out tire well and battery well, glassed the doors back in, filled 367 holes and metal Flaked the entire body inside and out. Custom Roll Cage, Custom Chassis. Brian is coming this weekend to pick it up and take it home for finishing.
Then I will be helping wvbowtieman finish off his Moss Green Manx to take on the ECVW '15 trip.
Once Back from CA, who knows what I will get into, but most likely the Viper. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I got nowhere this winter due to physical limitations. I did purchase my off road air filter and am still noodling about where I want to mount it. I'm helping a friend of mine on a 36 Chev project that needs my welding skill (and welder), so my metal projects on the buggy are on hold until that is done.
I'd say you had a good winter, Joe! |
