Still whittling away at it. One project at a time. Today’s rebuild was the pedal assembly.

59 years of funk and rust took its toll. But here it is, good to go!

Last bit for this weekend before I go back to work.
Built up the generator and fan. Installed the thermostat and cooling ring. Adjusted said cooling ring per the Bentley manual and checked operation. Ops check good. Cooling ring opens to 25mm when the thermostat is fully expanded.

Now I think I'll do some odds and ends to finish up the motor. I'll put together another order for brake stuff later. Getting closer...

Chassis looks very good! What paint did you use? I see 2 cans with strainers in the background in a few shots.

It’s called DupliColor pre mixed lacquer. I used their grey primer and jet black.

A couple of tips:
- You want to clean up those tranny shaft splines so your clutch disc can slide freely (check it with the plate before installing the pressure plate.
- Then clean up the shaft tip surface where gland nut bearing rides. Remove the rust, polish the tip with fine emery cloth until it shines, then grease the needle bearing lightly.

X2 ^^

Personally, if the gland nut bearing was riding on that shaft, I'd replace it.

And cleaned
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I knew as soon as I posted that picture someone was gonna catch that I hadn’t cleaned that shaft. Remember, she’s been outside uncovered for over a year. When the motor came out originally, the shaft was clean. That was just surface rust you saw. The pilot bearing in the gland nut is fine. Already been checked.

Goodies arrived via FedEx! Decided to take the night off from work.
New clutch disc and pressure plate, muffler, chrome tips, install kits for the muffler and tips, fuel pump rebuild kit.

I torqued the flywheel to 217 ft lbs first. Removed the fan shroud and generator for repaint. Installed the clutch on the flywheel after testing the fit on the input shaft (it's good) and put some grease on the pilot bearing in the gland nut. Centered the disc on the flywheel and Torqued the pressure plate. Removed the three packing clips, actually while torquing they fell out on their own. Installed the muffler and the the chrome tips.

Next up, paint the intake manifold and install. Sorry, no pics this afternoon.

It was Lao Tzu who said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". This weekend was made up of several small steps, but important ones.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Had to strip the motor down a little bit
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Broke out the sandblast cabinet and cleaned up some parts for paint. Intake manifold...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Heater boxes
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Left side heater box installed with the muffler and the repair section for the exhaust pipe.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The left side shoe box was pristine but needed cleaning and paint. It got it, and then it was installed.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Looks pretty good so far. The right side shoe box was another story.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Some pretty nasty rust on this side panel.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A closeup of the worst...
These babies are hard to find. And people must think they are made of gold. Well, I decided to do a little fabrication. Not having a bead roller was a bit of a handicap.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So, this is a scab patch. But it'll work until I can find another shoe box or until I make another one.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It needs to be attached to the box after the box gets sandblasted and that rust is trimmed out. A little filing and paint and you'd be hard pressed to see the patch. Anyhoo, good place to end the weekend.

Shoebox repair...today I sandblasted the old box. Painted it and the scab patch.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Popped some holes where it’ll be riveted and decided to trim the patch a little bit. Here it is secured with Clecos.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Opened the holes up and deburred the metal and applied a thick layer of sealant.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Put the scab patch back on and used clecos to pull the two pieces together.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Used a 9x gun to set solid rivets.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

All rivets set and edge sealed the scab patch. I’ll paint it tomorrow once the sealant cures.

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving Samba peeps! I have a houseful of grandchildren, so I retreated to the garage.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Old flap from the shoebox and notice one of the retaining tabs is broken off
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I made new flaps
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Attached the arm bracket using solid rivets again
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Installed the shoebox and heater box. Then installed the flap. That's a delicate operation trying to fit my hand in the hole place a washer over the actuating rod and fish a cotter pin through the hole in the rod. Yeah, I was beginning to think I might not get it, when the clouds parted and everything lined up.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Et voila! Kind of cool how it works. One flap closes while the other opens. I'll make the one for the driver's side later.

Looks great so far! Don't forget about sending the body out though Wink

Also, there is about zero chance you are NOT in aircraft maintenance, judging from this thread!! Laughing

Well, what gave it away? Ha ha, yes I've turned a wrench or two on a few different aircraft since 1989. I've not forgotten the body, just saving it for next. I want the chassis done before I move to body work.

Last bit for tonight while waiting on the paint to dry, is to lay out for some welding tomorrow. Gas pedal mount bracket and studs for floor mats. If I feel really motivated I might tackle drums and wheel bearings....IF!

A slight change in plans this morning. I decided to utilize my son-in-laws assistance before they leave, and get the motor off the stand.

The motor is WAY easier to install without that pesky body in the way.

And my view from where my back is asking me, "Why? Why don't you take a break??"
And so I shall.

I know Bill. I will. Interesting thing about the coil is the date code on the bottom is November 1959. Not original but close enough. Coil and condenser bench check good.

I'm not done with the chassis yet. Still have fuel pump and carburetor rebuild, coil restore, fuel lines, vacuum line, some welding, brakes and bearings, and tires.
