I was driving up Sunnyside Ave in Salt Lake City today and spotted my neighbors tintop that is always parked along that street outside of his house. Whoever hit it crossed through the 3 foot wide bike lane. This was only 2 blocks up the street from my house. I feel really bad for the owner even though I have never met him. The first thing I noticed were 3 orange cones that had been put there to keep it from being hit again.

Unfortunately, that's not the first Vanagon I've seen damaged like that after being street parked. There was a very similar picture posted here a while back of a camper in Seattle (IIRC) that was totaled by a drunk driver while parked in front of the owner's house and the back of it looked almost identical.

On a related note, I think it's worth saving those rust free Vanagon shells that show up from time to time for instances like this one. There's been a good Bordeaux Red GL parted out shell for sale on Seattle CL for $100 for the last month. No takers, so it will probably get cut up or sent to the crusher, but it's really the ultimate replacement part, and can keep a van on the road when something like this happens.

Time flies, here is my last splitty nine years ago. Hit and run. Literally the other car could not drive and the driver ran. Good luck with the insurance. Sucks

That sucks. I see it all the time on the way to hockey. It's parked on the outside of a S corner going uphill and people always accelerate and drive too fast there. Likely someone distracted. We have a couple parts vans at work but I can't remember if I've ever seen that one come in.

Snow off and on all Thursday, followed by ice fog in the late evening, would be my guess.

And, I'm thinking that it is wonderful that there was not a cyclist in the bicycle lane at the wrong time. I hope the owner gets his van fixed without too much hardship. Also, I hope the perpetrator is held MUCHO responsible...as in, I hope they're found.

Sad Sad

With the way people drive these days, I wouldn't even consider parking my cars on the street if I had a driveway to use. Confused

My van is only occasionally parked on the street, and never overnight unless I'm camping in it. This is also the reason I don't ride my bicycle on the street anymore--too many unconscious people behind the wheel. I've had too many close calls.

If this helps, there is a Vanagon shell for sale in Seal Beach, Calif. It can be found by looking at Craig's List - Orange County - auto parts - vanagon in search box.
