I'm pretty sure that rag is cheese cloth, it's great for removing wax and was very popular back in the day.
You can find it at your local Vato zone or FLAPS. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

Me too but I got out bid. |
I think $36.00 is a heck of a deal, you don't see these often! I have yet to see one here on the Samba! The weird thing is, I missed it while it was on e-bay, I apparently didn't use the correct phrase in the search... _________________ 1958 Agave Beetle (0\_!_/0)

I found my old can of Polierwasser. This one has no cap. There is like a recessed metal plug in the top though where a cap would normally be. It's full. Has anyone else seen one like this?

Here is a reproduction of the 1960’s VW Car Care Kit box I made. It is a bit time consuming but a fairly simple project. It took me about two days (including drying times) to make one box. If you don’t include drying time it took me about 3 hours of actual trimming and fit up.
Here is the process:
1. Locate a suitable box. The box I used is available at Office Depot (Item # 999696).
2. Find a printer willing to take the box and design the covers used on the box and the insert. I had them printed of very thin paper (24 lb).
3. Trim the outside cover and use spray adhesive (I used 3M Multi-Purpose Super 77) to attach it to the box. Smooth it out completely and put weights on it and let it dry.
4. Trim the inside cover and use spray adhesive to attach it to the box. Smooth it out completely and put weights on it and let it dry.
5. Once the covers are completely dry fold the box into the carrying case and insert the plastic carrying handle.
6. Cut a flat piece of cardboard to size for the inner insert and attach the insert printing to the cardboard with spray adhesive. Once completely dry, cut the perforations per the insert print and bend the inner insert to shape.
7. Cut and shape the outer insert. This piece is needed because the Office Depot box is slightly bigger than the original VW Car Care Kit box.
8. Adhere the inner insert into the outer insert and center the inserts into the box.
9. Fill the box and enjoy.
If you have any questions about the process...let me know. |

Incredible! |
That is incredible , I work in the printing industry and just ran some 28" X 40" #24 paper for some test inserts, trimmed to 38x15 folded it down to 2x3what a pain in the ass. I'm amazed how you covered the box so well, especially wrapping the top and inside cover. Great job !!!!! _________________ F#CK CANCER

Thanks for the kind words. There were a few steps that were a bit painful.
Here are a few things I learned while ruining the first three boxes…
Take your time with the trimming and fit up. If you don’t get it right the end product will suffer…always measure at least twice and cut once.
Use a permanent spray adhesive and apply weight while it dries. Although you have to be careful with spray adhesive because it can be messy and get on surfaces you don’t want glue on, it provided the best even coverage and permanent adhesion. I tried using a white glue like Elmer’s but it wetted the paper covers too much and when I folded the box bubbles developed in some areas.
Another item in the Car Care Kit that is difficult to find is the touch up paint – especially in the right color for your car. Even though their logo is pressed into the glass on one side, old Dupli-Color touch up paint bottles are about identical in size and shape to the VW touch up paint bottles that were used in the Car Care Kits. I found one on eBay and, thanks to some help from Everett; I was able to reproduce a label. I had some original Ruby Red paint that is the same color as by 65 Beetle so I painted the inside of the bottle and put on the label. If I ever find an original bottle of VW touch up paint I’ll replace it in the kit. If you want a label, I have a template and some self-sticking labels. Let me know what color and paint code you want on the label and your address I’ll send you a label you can put on your bottle - no charge. Here is a close-up picture of the bottle in my kit:

That handmade repo box is sweet!
Here is mine, picked up at an antique fair decades ago. Is this the bakelite cap?

Thought some folks might be interested in seeing a VW Car Care Kit I recently acquired. It is fairly complete except for the polishing cloth and the touch up paint was a touch up applicator instead of the glass jar. So, if you have an original polishing cloth and/or correct touch up paint in any color for sale please let me know. The wax and polish cans have never been opened and are still factory sealed. The polish is still liquid but, unfortunately the plastic cap on the wax has a crack so the wax is now dried up inside the can. The Chromlin has never been used and still has a nice box and the instructions. Enjoy...
