Not to start a political rant, but it's an unusual bumper sticker on a California car, and NorCal at the, judging form the license plate frame.
Oh, and nice oval in the background, too! |

Ronald Reagan was Governor of California from 67 to 75 and Republican. Reagan to Swazenager had six Governors, 4 out of them were Red. California has a lot of Red to it. Depends on where you go. Washington State and Oregon as well.
When COVID goes away the first week of novenmber, it will be interesting to see how things pan put color wise in historically one color dominate areas. _________________

Looks like Mark's (W1K1) car. Oh wait that's snow on the roof. Well actually Marks roof could have snow on it too. And it could even hide the primer. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

it has the euro flat tails though.
I would like to talk to the old guy that had the car originally to see if he had a picture or two I could scan. I haven't seen him in a couple years. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I agree it's '66 or could be '67 too
European car but looks like the 66-67 "big nipple" hubcaps
I can't figure out the color though, no 66-67s Fastys came in Yellow?

Pre-production US-spec Squareback. From my dad's huge family photo collection; a 720 dpi scan of a Kodachrome slide. Taken in 1964 at our home in Southern Calif. north of Santa Monica. Dad was a field service engineer for VW Pacific in Culver City. VW imported some Squarebacks one or two years before the original market introduction (late '65? for '66 model year) to be distributed among the employees for evaluation, and for service and Parts market preparation. It's possible that it was designated for my mother who first learned to drive a few years earlier in a Dodge Valiant, though she never mastered a manual transmission. Dad's regular Beetle company car is next to it. The flowers are mom's talent. |

Very cool, I wonder what year it was... Maybe 1964?
Ask your dad if it had dual carbs, which would be 64 and later
It's not "pre-production" just pre- USA sales.
You are correct about the late 65 sales here.

Thanks for the Weathervane article, Everett. It's been several years since I scanned the slide from the original Kodak box, so it'd be a chore to search for it among dozens of others in case dad wrote the dates on the box... which he usually did. I'm fairly certain it's '64, which would also make the engine a dual-carb. My dad passed away 40 years ago .
I have another of dad's photos which is a close-up, showing the Beetle is a '63 due to the T engine handle and the rounded, not wide lic. plate light. Mom and I are in the shot, which is why I don't want to post it.
Vehicle manufacturers send out lists of VIN ranges for each officially-imported or certified model to state DMV offices to enable owners/customers to register the vehicle. This activity is done after the model has been type-approved and certified for the US market, taking place prior to the official sales start date. The Squareback has conventional Calif plates, not manufacturer plates. So that's another clue the photo was in '64 based on the Weathervane's model announcement, and that the '63 Beetle was kept well after the transition to '64's. |

The Beetle in this photo is a '65, with the larger windows/slimmer posts.

The fastback above looks really level to me as opposed to the normal stock look of the front being a bit higher.
I wonder if they had a full tank and some stuff loaded up front?
Is it just me or are there no side markers?
I see a glare there on the side but it looks like it's not a side marker _________________ How to Post Photos
