The Kamei rear trunk cover and the Huls recliners are bitchen. You never see those on cars. _________________

A beautiful RUBINROT squareback, by then at least 7 years old (park opened 1972). Something people always did (and still do ) over here, is keeping their winter tires and move it onto the next (same model) car they purchase. Easy explanation for the slotted wheels. My father still does this and moved the 'older' winter tires over to his new Golf VII. |
I was just going to say something to that effect. _________________

This has been posted a long time ago, but I can fill in the back story.
This isn't Africa.
Car has an Austrian license plate, N for Niederösterreich ( the large region around Vienna). In the 1970s and 80s there was a Drive Through Safari park in Gänserndorf, Niederösterreich (approx 20 miles from Vienna). So that's where this was most probably shot. I once had a 1965 Impala 4dr ht that still had the Safari park sticker in the windshield.
I was looking for Type 3 with old Austrian plates, but nearly non here in this topic ( because type 3s weren't that common here) in comparison to the oval/split/bus vintage pic threads which are full of Austrian cars. |
My car looks exactly Like that. That is a '64-'65 S or E model with early slotted wheels. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.
I recycle old cars and parts, other than when I rot, that's as Green as I am going to get.
Thanks to my Tesla driving neighbors, I feel more relaxed driving my SUBURBAN and old VW's.

Two 1500 S Notchbacks participated in the 250 km production car race held the day before the Sebring 12 Hour Endurance Race in Sebring Florida on March 20, 1964. Both entered in Class 9 by John E. Ryan, Griffin, GA. #18 driven by Jack Ryan, #19 by "Smokey" Drolet. The VW dealer in Griffin was RBM Motors.
Final preparations just prior to the drivers getting out, heading across the track and awaiting the "LeMans" style start in which the drivers run back across the race track, jump into their cars and drive off. Is that a woman in the driver's seat? Since the Notchbacks were never officially imported into the USA by VWoA, I wonder if this dealer brought it in via Canada as a slightly used vehicle, then ran it "legally" with his dealer license plate?
Looks like this #19 Notch is the last to leave... The two white Ford Lotus Cortinas in the center were driven by racing greats Jim Clark and Dan Gurney. They were in the same class as the Notches, and Mr. Clark finished 1st in class.
In the race, behind a Ford Galaxie (overall race winner driven by Dave MacDonald) and in front of a Morris Mini Cooper, not an "S" per the entrant list.
In front of a Volvo 122 Sedan-
At the pit area, though not during the active race due to nobody tending to the car. Looks like the Notch was slightly lowered, and is the front fender "rolled"? No apparent need for doing that with the near-stock tires and rims...
