So you can remove/ replace the resonator/ tailpipe assembly with the muffler installed and to give extra clearance in that area to remove the muffler with the engine installed. Look at how the TP installs on the Type 4.

I never understood the two bumps in the center. They look so purposeful, but I can't see any reason for them. The ribs give enough strength.
Even those ribs... why weren't they cut out like on the Type 4s?

I always look at the apron on a nice Type 3 and sadly, most of the time they are not right. They are hard to fix and people just leave them all banged up or bent because "no one will see it behind the bumper." But I'll always look.
Weird fetish on my part, but I love a nice Type 3 apron.

Kids look done up too so clearly the car was like another son to him.
