From my dad's huge family photo collection; a 720 dpi scan of a Kodachrome slide with hardly any color correction needed by the scanner. Taken in 1964, somewhere in Southern Calif. Dad was a field service engineer for VW Pacific in Culver City in the western Los Angeles area. VW imported some Squarebacks (aka Station Wagon, or the German model name Variant) a year before the original market introduction (late '65? for '66 model year) to be distributed among the employees for evaluation, and for service and Parts market preparation. Note the lack of side marker lights! In another photo of the same car it had conventional Calif. "black" license plates. That's my mom and me. |
Great photo.
Yes, looks like a US-spec '65 model to me.
You could get an export '65 on Tourist Delivery in Europe too, I used to own one that was brought over.

Excellent info source on the Squareback Tourist Program, Everett. Did the one you bought still have the oval "customs" license plate(s) which would've been issued and installed at Wolfsburg to enable driving in Europe? I remember many owners kept the front oval plate on once the car was back in the USA, as a "souvenir".
My dad had a very good eye for photo subject composition, and often put his VW company car into the shot somewhere. Camera was his trusty Voigtlaender Vitomatic 1 35mm fixed lens with full manual adjustments. |

Unfortunately it had no original Tourist parts or records when I got it.
I think it had passed through a few owners since new and it's passed through a few owners after I sold it too as I saw it for sale several times afterward.
Current location unknown. _________________ How to Post Photos

You're right about the location Phil, but I'm taking away ½ point for spelling it "Ray" instead of Rey. Just above that big white trailer you can see a white letter L on the hillside; that stands for Loyola University, now known as Loyola Marymount University. M and U were added on the hillside after the name change. The white buildings on the mesa directly above the trailer, including the clock tower standing above all other buildings, are all part of the campus. LMU is located in the community of Westchester. The campus is one mile north of LA Intl. airport. |

Very good, Randal (and Phil); I agree! The white buildings at the top of the hill further to the right (above the S'back's wipers) are where Lincoln Blvd comes down that plateau to intersect with Jefferson Blvd. The large flat field between Jefferson and LMU's hill used to be the landing field/airstrip for Hughes Aircraft. Our office had a small office just off Jefferson through the late '90s which I'd visit many times. Now that field is full of $ $ condos. |

Not to take this too far off course...
I did some work there when I worked for Hughes before they sold it off. Also, the movie Tucker was filmed in one of the Hughes buildings. And the early version of Microsoft Flight Simulator had that airstrip as one of the location options. This seems strange until you learn that the software author used to work for Hughes and put it there so he could fly "his" airport! |

Mudflaps, too?
Anyone else notice how many of these photos (not just Type 3) show accessories like foglamps? An inexpensive car, but often heavily accessorized. A bit strange.

We still do this today with these old VW's and with any other car for that matter as Ev said - got to show your own flair. _________________

Oh, I do too, I'm not finding fault. I'm just surprised that there are so few photos of "vanilla" cars. I suppose those who took photos were especially proud, and therefore more likely to accessorize. |

This is a very good point! Proud owners. If only we had digital back then... _________________ How to Post Photos

This is true. All the Type 3s in my family were definite workhorses and not photo models. No pictures of entire cars exist.
In fact, when I do my '63, the only accessory will be a radio. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

True, if you only have one accessory, go all out. Top of the line period Blaupunkt with red or blue tip antenna.
I'm not sure which one is more top shelf - red or blue? _________________ How to Post Photos
