Look what followed me home!

I was fortunate to find this 65' project http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=548772
VWBugger's project will live on and hopefully do him and his Dad proud by continuing high quality restoration of this cool car!

I have been out of the VW scene for a few years while venturing into the 914World. Previously, I had an awesome little BloodOrange 1972 Super Beetle that got me hooked on these wonderful little cars! Joined up with the Cascade Kombis Car Club in the Seattle area and tried to soak up the knowledge from all the fine folks!

Now, the Suby 914 is forsale and making room for this new adventure!

Deciding what engine to use, stock or bump to a 1600. The car came with a 1600 case so that's where I am headed toward.

Other than that, the Boss said only one project at a time. So, if someone wants to help make room for the 65' in my garage go look at the 914 thread!

My 5 year old daughter likes the Bug but is sad to see Daddy's "Race Car" go Sad I told her this is Daddy's new race car! She was not impressed but she was late to watch "Wild Kratz" on PBS Rolling Eyes
After she gets a ride in the final product she will get excited again like her Dad! I really couldn't believe how much I missed these little cars and the smiles they bring with them!

I have just started the rally-fication of my 58 so will be watching this one closely.

I still have to inventory everything that came with the car, especially the engine.

Question for the peanut gallery? Keep the swing axle or convert the rear end to IRS? I am also upgrading the electrical to 12v so if I keep the swing axle do I need to change it to the newer 12 swing transmission?

i had no idea bob beales ran cibie biode headlights... Cool

as for the irs swap, what do the rules say?

a 12V gearbox has a slightly clearenced bell housing as the 12V flywheel is a fractionally larger dia. while it needs to be considered, it is not a primary concern as there plenty of options to work around it.

I'd stick to swingaxle- but with a compensator- far more period correct. And being honest, would you really hang that car out to the verge of insanity?

Sorry this pic is so big, but this rally thing has me hooked to- this is my '62 so far (don't worry, the original glove box door was not harmed):

I just recently test-mounted an orphan Cibie Oscar on the front- but boy it's huge! I can barely open the hood, but might have to be the first on the block, you know... I've got earlier exterior views in my gallery.

Alrighty then! Made some headway in the rust repair department! I wasn't able to source a car that I could cut into that wasn't too rusty so, I fabbed my own patch.

I had a piece of 18 gauge sheet metal left over from the 914 build and used Grandpa Eddy's vice as a makeshift brake to shape the contour into the patch. I drilled out the parcel tray spot welds in case I had to do any further surgery on the firewall. Luckily, I didn't! But I did clean out all the rust that I could reach and zapped the metal with some Zero Rust paint.

Next, I dusted off the MIG and began to stitch in the new metal without blowing out the older sheet metal.

Filled in the rosettes in the welds and spot welds. I wasn't too worried about this area of the car since no one will see it once the rain shield is back in place and the headliner reinstalled. Used the grinders and air tools to get it ready.

Still a few pinholes to fill but, overall I am happy! Still, a little paint prep to do later down the road. on the rear firewall.

As the PO mentioned in his thread, why would someone cut out the car to mount speakers here? So, I took the time to massage in two sheet metal patches and fill in some rouge holes Very Happy

Again, I am pleased how everything came out and only have a bit of paint prep to blend in down the road .

I am trying to keep as much OG Sea Blau paint showing as possible!

However, i did go the autobody paint store and had them mix up 2 rattle cans of VW L360 Sea Blue so I could paint areas that are difficult to access later.

I found this pic of Bob Beales' race car with another rally example from the Volksworld site. I am trying to decide whether or not to paint the front bonnet black or keep it body color. Confused

Either way, paint is farther down the road!

Next, is to build a body dolly and separate the pan from the body!

I have a 67 parts car that someone did this to , I've seen 3 others in scrap yards that had similar circular holes, some idiot's think alike it would seem

Looking good! It's so much nicer now the weather is better. I'm getting relit about my car as well, as long as I can keep my hands off my "new" 1965 westfalia. Next up: trimming a front bumperette to clear the Oscar. I really miss having real bumpers on this thing:

Hitest, no worries about posting Rallye cars! Plus, we have to represent the PNW!

What engine powers your sweet ride?

I am pondering my options right now... $$$ is a big hurdle for me to keep it Airkewld!! A Suby powerplant with 4 wheel disc brakes would make it a fun (and safer) driving car. Keeping the Swing axle and Kingpin front end would still give it the vintage car driving feel! Twisted Evil

Anywho, first things first. Refurbish the pan!

That '62 is very stock- original stale air 40 and stock trans. It was updated to 12v along the way however, so it deviates with an 009 distributor and other 12v bits. The starter winds up like dremel tool- so I'm hunching it's still 6v.

The summer has been busy with everything but VW work Rolling Eyes

However, some progress on the pan has occurred! The WW orange pan halves have been sitting in the garage since February. I have been collecting front and rear axle components too! Lots of CB Performance goodies that will help keep the wheels on the ground and stop them too!

It's great to see an update on one of my favorite threads! I finally got the nerve to chopsaw an overrider to clear my Cibie Oscar (don't worry, no German parts were harmed during this maneuver). Here it is at our annual car show last June- it was 106 degrees that day! A new record for Boise, but attendance was way down. I'm parked between a friend's '50 and another kind of car that has cool hood straps.

Sure! It is : Heavy Duty Nozzle Dip Gel Pint

Welding supply stores or Grainger has it. You dip in the freshly trimmed wire before you ZAP the weld in order to reduce the amount of slag splatter. Hopefully, to make cleaner welds.
