Manfred, Do you have some history on my bus?
What happened to it in your shop?
Seems like some neglect happened, the last owner seemed to just let things go. Already have the basics taken care of and she is a safe driver again (at least on fair days.) Going to start patching some holes soon.
The engine runs strong though, did you rebuild it? |

I know a handful of splitty guys in the Evergreen area that would love a trip like this. I'm all game and willing to do whatever it takes to make this trip happen. I'm all for dirt road driving too. _________________ '77 Westy 2.0L FI

Really happy this thread took off! I am always down for a southern CO trip. Love the San Juan's! As for kids and family friendly on the Medano Pass trip I am all for it! My 2 boys and wife would be bummed if I didn't include them. _________________ 83 Vanagon

O.K. thanks for the response, I say Splits should be welcome on this journey as well. Let me expand a bit on family friendly, I would hope we all conduct ourselves in a tolerant, sober, and respectful manner. Campfires oft bring forth intense conversations, let's make sure everyone feels welcome and comfortable. How about some input on a cool name for this, Medano Pass Meet-up is in the ring, any more ideas? _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Agreed.. Camping trips are way better when drama free! As for names Medano Pass Meet-Up works for me. I really am looking forward to this! Thanks for taking the reigns on this Manfred! _________________ 83 Vanagon

I don't think any of this will be a issue. As I recall on the last trip everybody went to bed by 9pm and was up with the sun. Except me of coarse, I was the last one to bed (at 11) and the last one to be ready in the morning .
So...how about a new thread? _________________ __________

There might be a *gasp* full Eurovan Camper following behind my '77 if our family makes this trip. With twins just approaching 16 months at that point and still in carseats, wife will likely still want the safety/comforts/furnace of an EVC (not just her, I don't feel comfortable with baby seats on the flimsy rear riviera bench in my bus). _________________ -------

I only bring up the courtesy guide based on other experiences I have had (not the Wolf creek journey 2 years back, great time no issues). Communication builds better events every time. Personally, I am fine with opening the trip up to all VW Bus's, Vanagon's, and EuroVans (how does one keep those on the road??), it would be cool to see so many different styles represented. The last time I went over the pass I would say any 2wd could do it, there are some spots to watch out for, so decent driving skill is required. The Eurovans may want to let a Bus w/better clearance lead the charge. We can communicate any issues with cell phones. I have camped at the Dunes in April many times and it will still be cold at night, so be prepared. I use a Vietnam era arctic down bag and that does the trick, not sure how that translates to more modern sleeping bags. Remember, it's 8400 ft and some propane furnaces don't work properly at that altitude. Of course this all ads to the adventure, and gives us stuff to prepare for (like smores!!). Not quite ready to start the thread on this yet, still need to hammer out the dates. Any more thoughts, or suggestions??? _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

I just watched a slide show Medano Pass and it looks awesome. The only trouble area may be the 3 water crossings, they may be a bit high is late April. But hell I'm in! How does the last weekend in April sound, the 24th thru 26th? Meet up and camp at the state park Friday night. Meet the Saturday morning crew at the trail head, maybe noonish and do some Vdubin. The trail is only 20 miles and isn't going to take a few hours (with lots of breaks). Camp out on the northeast side of the pass (wet valley?) Saturday night and on the road home Sunday to our families and jobs.
Stuart, that's 5 months away. You can make it
Edit:
I've been researching this trail a bit on the interweb. Looks way better on YouTube then the pictures I was looking at. Most of the posts I read on jeep forums say it's a 4-5 hour drive, so maybe we should meet earlier like 10ish. There looks like lots of camping on the trail with plenty of room for a big crew. Every thread I reads basicly says the same thing, lots of sand, spring run off make the water crossing high (but a stock hight 4x4 can make it, we got clearance covered) and some mud. But all in all the trail looks like a great time. Here are two links to the trail on YouTube.

Stuarts driving a bus - 45 minutes.
Challenge accepted.
Funnily enough, as i was reading i was like....i could plan for this, its far enough out....then that line right to me made me laugh out loud as i was already thinking it.
Also, heavily vote cb radios, channel 2! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
