PostPosted: Tue Dec 16, 2014 2:12 pm    Post subject: Help with Rims for Ghia Reply with quote

I recently purchased a '74 Karmann Ghia. I can't figure out the type of rims that are on it. It looks like some sort of wheel covering should go here but there isn't anything to grab hold of for a cap etc. I'm thinking about replacing the rims, but I maybe replacing something good...just not sure what I've got. This is a picture of the rims. Any suggestions of what these rims are or suggestions if I do replace them? I appreciate any advice as this is my first project car.

Maybe the cap fit in from the back?

Here is a picture I found on Bing of a red Ghia (my Ghia was red at some point). The picture indicated it was from Samba Gallery but I couldn't find it.
Thanks for helping with the link...this one may need help too!

Your wheels look like Rivieras.
The wheels Barksman and 60ragtop show look like the original wheel Rivieras were copied from. Formula V or GT Mags. I read ...someplace...that the VW dealership in Beaverton Oregon duplicated them and so they called them "Rivieras" . Dealership was Riviera VW.

The center caps that fit those are held in place with set screws tightened from the back side of the rim. The caps are available from different vendors and I have seen ads here also.
Do a search here for Riviera rims.

The wheels on your '74 are reproduction versions of Riviera wheels.
There are a few different center caps available for them.

I had a set similar they were reproductions .. the caps I had surprisingly didn't grab onto anything, you just slotted them in and in some miraculous force of nature they just stayed put! (no screw)

This wheel is a Formula Vee wheel.

The original "Riviera" the FV wheel was offered by VW dealers. I have a set of 5 that are all polished now. The center cap for these wheels are completely different form the ones with the raised square on them.

They are most likely Riviera clones from American Eagle wheels - they were popular in the Eighties. The raised 'squares' on the spokes point me to believe that they are AE wheels...
