Proper?

It's not a restoration. It never will be restored (at least not by me)
The pan, body, transmission, and engine don't match.
That's what made it a perfect candidate for a Herbie. The body is correct for Herbie so the rest doesnt matter. Nobody should be pissed that I didn't return it to what it originally was.
It's a car for me to enjoy, and that's what I'm doing with it.

I know. My writing skills suck. I'm also the anti Herbie purest. Like Disney I didn't care what year I used. I'm always asking the Purest what car are we supposed to be coping and from what movie or TV show?Wink good times, enjoy the ride!

Whilst searching google for something else I came across a reference to the fact that Herbie's 53 number is a reference to Wolfgang von Trips and his split window beetle (with ragtop)that he raced in the fifties. He died in 1961 in a terrible crash at Monza and a movie about his career was proposed starring Robert Redford but was never made - so Disney used the number 53 on Herbie as a tribute.
Just thought that was an interesting nugget of knowledge...

Very interesting.
The only story that I've ever heard about it was that Producer Bill Walsh was a big LA Dodgers fan and chose the number 53 (and color scheme) because of Pitcher Don Drysdale

That's the explanation they give on the DVD set. I'm not 100 percent sure but Herbie is a name Buddy Hacker used from his stand up act about his uncle who was boxer like the story he gives in the movie.

Parts continue to arrive
Tail light housings to replace the snowflakes that were on the car when I got it (snowflakes were traded away for a 1600)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My door screws, key blank, Danish 1/4 pan section , and Danish lower A pillar sections also arrived (even though UPS claimed they were destroyed by flood or fire a few days ago)

I also dropped off the 1600 and 1835 cases to Conemac Precision Machining in Canoga Park this morning .
Rick is going to check them out along with the cranks, heads, flywheels etc so I see where I stand.
I'm having him build the 1600 shortblock while it's there as I'm a little rusty and his prices seemed reasonable .
The 1835 is just getting cleaned repaired and prepped for a later build.

Ol' Herb was put on hold
I blew the head gasket on my Honda Civic commuter car

A head gasket kit (with new head bolts) was $100 and a rebuilt head runs about $300
A low mileage JDM engine was $500 (plus tax and $50 core). These have 40k-60k miles on them , and my Civic has 200k
So, I decided to do a JDM engine swap on Saturday

With intake, exhaust, accessories, etc needing swapped , it took me about 12 hours by myself
No too bad

Runs like a champ now

First off,I dig your build.I recently picked up a 62 I plan to start building later this year. I wanted to show you our Herbie and let you know that the guy that did the wrap is a pro and everyone compliments our RZR. He could do the same to your car for a small fraction of having it painted. If you decide to go that route, contact Up Dog Wraps in Grand Terrace.

Thank you. Ol' Herb is on hold right now as we sell our house, buy another, and move to another city.
fortunately, we found a house and a buyer for ours. both are supposed to close on June 30.
I thought about a wrap already. but, I think investing the money for the wrap towards a more permanent paint job would be money better spent.
If I was waffling about making it a Herbie, then I would definitely go with a wrap.
although, getting it wrapped like a bananas car would be kinda cool

I was doing some garage work today and was looking at Ol’ Herb
I noticed that his front fenders (wings) don’t match
The giveaway is the horn grills
The driver’s side is higher than the passenger
Damn aftermarket crap

I thought the driver side was repop
But it looks like the passenger might be lol
I have an original driver fender that I purchased that had some cracks .I was teaching myself to weld on it
The horn grill is in the lower position like the passenger side
It’s very hard to actually measure because of the shape of the fenders
I think I’ll pull the old one off and stick the donor on and see if it “looks right”
