If I was waffling about making it a Herbie, then I would definitely go with a wrap. |
Put the money into a good white paintjob, then if you still want to do a Herbie have it done in vinyl. That way if you get sick of it you can peel it off and have a nice white car. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. I do plan on getting a quality paintjob.
Vinyls are available for the stripes and gumballs, so I'll be using those most likely _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I took Ol’ Herb outside today so he could get a little sunlight
Actually, we sold our house and he’s being relocated to a friends house while we make the move .
I wish I could drive him out there though lol _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I dragged Ol’ Herb Home today after work.
The right rear axle nut got a little warm on the way (I stopped every few miles to check as the car hasn’t been on the road in years)
I have floors and paint to do in the house , and then I can start again on his resurrection _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Today i planned to reorganize the garage and unload the stuff I put inside Ol’ Herb when we moved
I got the garage mostly straight but didn’t get to unloading
Before
After
I would have unloaded the bug , but I accidentally unloaded my toolbox instead

Thanks man, But I have so far to go.
I have pretty much decided that I will be pulling the body off .
The pan and body are from different years, so I was on the fence.
It's not gonna be a full resto, so why pull the body?
well, I decided to pull the body in order to make the chassis easier to repair as I go.
I have new brake and fuel lines to run and a repair to the battery tray section.
I'd also like to get a look at the rear shock mounts and rear suspension in general.
Also, the bottoms of the a-pillars need patched (heater channels are fine though) so that would be easier if the pan wasn't in the way.
They don't look as bad as this though lol

LOL! That was pretty bad, but I did not pull the body off the pan to fix that, just welded new pieces in.

Today is Christmas
My wife bought me a new wiring harness from Wolfsburg West
And my son and his wife bought me a salt and pepper carpet kit from CIP1
Also, my daughter picked a up a Herbie clock for the garage
You’ll notice it’s the one with the body flipped on the pan to drive in reverse
Very happy

Trying to get motivated today and started organization and prep for the body removal
Straightened up the garage first and probably gave myself a hernia by picking these two up and putting them on the bench by myself

I had to put OL' Herb on the back burner for a bit.
My daughter's BF borrowed the Civic for a couple weeks do get back and forth to work.
rainy conditions, long work hours, and fucking traffic on the 101 resulted in a small collision with a tow receiver on a pickup.
fortunately, the civic was the only one injured.
so, I ordered a bunch of parts and started fixing it
sorry, forgot to take pics of the new radiator, lines, condenser, fans, and brackets.
The fascia and hood are still jacked, but it's driveable now
I'm looking for junkyard donors that are the same color so I won't have to paint. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I pulled the driver front fender off and swapped it with an original German one
The horn grill and headlight were wonky and not where they should be
They were a little high

I finally made a decision to separate the body from the pan.
Today started to prep for that little task
I have to repair the bottom of the A pillars
The front and rear aprons need replaced .
Actually the whole front spare well needs replaced
As you can see the rear isn’t as bad as the front, but there are. I cutouts for the exhaust .
The front is cobbled together, bent, and twisted so it has to go
This will never be a show car since the body and pan don’t match . That’s ok, I knew it when I bought it .
But some things just have to be fixed lol _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I started to uncover some of the ugliness while stripping stuff off of the body,
This is the drivers side where the hood seal goes
It has been in an accident before and I dint know it when I bought it .It is what it is
They apparently welded a new seal channel in and used filler to smooth it out.
I’ll see what I can do to make it better
The passenger side has this ugliness on the door sill
I don't know what transpired here
I’ll clean it up and see
It is hidden by the running board so it doesn’t need to be perfect, just sound.
I also pulled off the external oil cooler from the firewall
This left a few holes . Actually there are about 20 from who knows what
The ground off areas are the holes
I’m in the process of welding them closed and struggling . I keep blowing through the sheet metal and making bigger holes
My cheap harbor freight wire welder might not cut it.
Probably doesn’t help that I’m learning to weld as I go
More pics to follow. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1
