I think the horn is straight, so I'm hoping to just replace the beam.
I'm planning on doing the mechanical issues first, then the cosmetics

Good point.
That the one that fell out of the INTERIOR of the car when it was lifted up by the giant forklift.
The original Link-pin was still in the car. I didnt even notice the difference when I posted the pic.
Can I install a ball-joint front beam if I go from hub to hub? _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I bought a bead blaster from Harbor Freight and started glass beading the bottom of the A pillars and the heater channels.
Yes, that's sunshine you see in the corner of the last pic
The sections were "repaired" by one of the PO's and they didn't do a good job so It'll need to be done again.
I know most of you guys would be ecstatic to only have this much rust, so I'll just consider myself lucky and shut my overprivelged Southern Californian mouth
BTW- the hose did blow off of the bead blaster and I had to clean up several pounds of glass bead inside the garage. Not fun.
Just upgrade your hose clamps and use 2 and you'll be ok I think. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Hey, how is this coming? I know it's been quite a while, but this looked like it was gearing up to be pretty good. Herbies are some of my favorite Vws. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

It's been on hold.
TBH I got a little discouraged with the bent beam/horn .
I'm planning on moving this spring/summer so I have house stuff to attend to before I can sell anyway.
I haven't given up though, just on the back burner.
I go back to Minnesota on Monday, and I'll be at the same junkyard. I'll see what's left of the carcass over the next few weeks. One thing I forgot to grab was the windshield chrome trim. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I had the garage door open today as I was doing the brakes on my daughter's Civic.
A dude pulls up and asks "is that a bug under that car cover?"
I said "yep"
He says "wanna sell it?"
No questioning of what year it was, what shape it is in, nothing.
Just straight out "wanna sell it?"
seems so odd to me. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Nothing else happened besides the guy just asking about the car.
I just returned from my 3+ week business trip.
I have a 4 day weekend, maybe I'll drag Ol' Herb out into the sunshine and see how he's looking. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I have found that going to Pomona or a VW car show gets me motivated again. But it is hard not to get discouraged when you see how much is left to do. I am pushing to finish my build by June, which would be the 3 year mark for me. I have made some good progress in the last few weeks, but still have some ways to go. I know we started around the same time, so don't give up!! I want to see both our cars on the road or at the same show one of these days!! |

Maybe if I drive down to Castaic, and look at yours, that will get me motivated LOL _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I had Ol' Herb out of the garage so I could do the timing belt on the Civic.
My wife was leaving to go over to my daughter's house and said " Your bug looks good in the sun, you need to get it running so we can go cruising around in it this summer"
That was very encouraging, so I'm gonna get busy on getting him at least driveable . _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

It does look good!! I don't see why you can't get him running and drive him as is for a while. Having a driving car is strong motivation! |

Thank you, but looks can be deceiving LOL
I agree, being able to drive it and upgrade as we go makes it much more achievable. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Today I went hunting for a few parts to reverse the "Cal Look" that Ol' Herb received at some point in the 80's or 90's
I picked up the two unmolested doors , a fender, and a pair of Ft turn signals
Everything needs a little work , but for $120 you can't bitch
The doors are rust free and the fender has two small tears and some surface rust

It feels good to be back on it too
I also got a straight front beam and a dash cut from another '63 from him
I have to pick it up this weekend _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

The beam and dash were actually delivered to my house this morning .
saved me a trip .
There are a couple of brackets welded onto the front that will have to be cut off,
but it did come with a gearbox
Here's the dash section. Yes, that's woodgrain vinyl stuck to the front of the Ruby Red OG paint.
My dash had the radio cut and a few holes filled in to smooth out the dash (probably in the 80's)
Any suggestions as to how much of the dash I should splice in ?
