Theres a 99 audi A4 for sale up here for 700 bucks 1.8t with 150k on it. Says was running fine then wouldnt start not a mechanic could be easy fix. I know could be anything. Are there a bunch of parts on it worth getting for my syncro? Bigger brakes , the engine for a conversion on my other syncro? Seems im always hearing about audi stuff getting put
on vanagons. Theres a cheap quattro too.

rims, maybe brakes if you're handy.
the engine is a great DIY 1.8T (again if you're handy)
but pop the upper timing belt cover off and verify it's still on there tight and 1 piece..
the no start could be as simple as a corroded starter wire.
could be a mashed timing belt.

for $700 I'd drag it home.. but I have a 99 1.8T in my van.

Sounds like a timing belt to me too. Open the cover and have someone crank it, watch the cam pulley to see if it turns.

That engine is based off the earlier block design (058), big intake port, no secondary air to deal with, 150hp, possible sludge!

Sounds like kind of a lot for a non runner if it's major engine damage. Could even be a fuel pump or a crank position sensor.

NOPE not all created equal but the (AEB) code 1.8Ts are great intro units.
they are only 150hp stock. vs the 02+ 180hp 1.8Ts. but there's a chip to bring the AEBs to 190hp.

the AEB 1.8Ts have the same external waterpump as the earl I4 ABA engines.
this is both a benefit or a hindrance depending on what belted accessories you want/need to run.

the 150hp 1.8Ts are easiest to adapt the wiring harness. and the ECU doesn't require a flash to overcome the lock-out function.

there's a few 1.8T info threads out here, so take the time to study (maybe print for hi-liting)

No. But none of the versions have huge downsides. The earlier AEB has a larger port head, and lots of the Audi guys going for big power like them better.

The AEB engine also has no immobilizer to deal with, But the sludge issue is huge. These engines spent the first few years of their lives with a oil capacity of 3.9 Quarts, Until a larger oil filter was made to bring the capacity up to 4.5 Quarts. I prefer the newer 06a 1.8t blocks over the older 058.

I was at the junkyard yesterday and there were 9 Passat and Audi a4 Cars with engines in them. Some had the valve covers removed and the internals were just plain nasty.

Flint even figured out how to install the AEB under the lid at fifty degrees with diesel bits

Bobs site has some good info on 1.8 Motors http://www.qedpower.com/ parts and crate motors.

I'm just finishing an amu hybrid aeb head with big turbo for my Audi tt 225 roadster. Long story.
