PostPosted: Tue Dec 02, 2014 8:04 pm    Post subject: Advice on pricing old VW Buses - 1955 Barndoor Standard Reply with quote

Hey all, a very good old friend of mine has 2 old VW vans sitting at his farm and had asked me to look into selling them. I had started to do some research on the vans and have learned that one is a pre 55 barn door Kombi and is very restorable but rough. the other is some where in the mid 60s and is in a lot worse shape as the rockers are rotted out.
How do I even go about pricing something like these? A fellow posted an ad in a local online buy/sell website and I had replied and told him about them and he wants them bad!
I just want to ensure my friend gets what they are worth. I will upload some gallery photos.
Thanks in advance!

If you do a search using "Barndoor" in the classifieds and limit it to type2−67 you should get some ideas. The bus you posted is undoubtably better than the cheapest bus in the classifieds at 14k but there is generally always a distinction between asking prices and selling prices. Also, maybe the seller wants it go to a good home? maybe this other guy is good dude, who desperately wants a barndoor? you could make his year, or maybe he is a lowlife flipper? Take you're time do the research and definitely wait to get few opinions especially from the locals. You will have no trouble selling that bus, only question is when and for how much.

How many of you guy's saw that license plate and his location to figure out where it is. It's a Canadian plate and St. Paul is almost dead center of Canada. too far from me but looks like a great project. I would have thought the greenery would have been more dead though? My luck it's in st. Paul Arkansas but just has a canadian plate..

I will focus on the Barndoor since you posted photos of it in your Gallery.

The Barndoor looks pretty good but how's the rust underneath and in general through the body - floors?

For what it's worth - it's a Standard, I can tell from the style of the interior panels.

Standard Microbus font door panel can be seen here.
Front seat looks Kombi though since it's black:

thanks for your input everyone, the fellow that wants to buy it seems like he genuinely wants it for himself and not to flip it. My PM folder is loaded with people wanting to buy it, although that's not why I posted it here. A very helpful forum member suggested if anything I should ebay the van. If I go that route I will (gently) pull the van into the shop and post tons of pics.
pics were takin about a month ago. this evening I will try to post pisc of the other van it has a old wooden rack on it. Best I could see its called a westfala rack?

Yes, prob eBay! Combine this with posting a link in the eBay classifieds section on The Samba...
It's a valuable bus...& looks to be in very decent condition. Unmessed with. Ace.
Top fade on it too
It's a late 53/54/into 55 barndoor as it has a rear bumper, later quarter-lights, later cab mat, smooth semaphores, etc etc

Cool pics of it in situ.

Yes ebay would seem fair, at least it gives us UK boys a fighting chance
Good luck with your sale.

I would be a bidder on eBay or any other method you choose. eBay obviously would be most fair to the seller

What's with the rectangular rear window? Is that a '55-only item on Barndoors?

Looks like a '51 to me. That might explain the black front seat.

I think that might just be the angle?

it does look like it has the 52-down license lense, unless that's been modified.
I do agree it has the later wing windows, semaphores, etc.

Post the VIN # too...

To me it looks like the paint is rubbed off above the brake light.. white paint not chrome.. making it look like a larger opening.. rear bumper? .. Im still thinking 54-55. but WOW... what a great find!!

It looks like some horizontal bumper guards were added to the rear bumper.

I will do my best to get the vin by the weekend. I am getting a lot of requests to post a picture of the other van as well so I guess I will just highjack my own thread Smile
Im getting a lot of offers to purchase the van and honestly I am not replying to them because im still getting info from some of the forum members as to value of these things.
And seriously whats with you U.K guys? u seriously want to ship this thing from the middle of Canada to home? whats the shipping cost for that? its gotta be like 5k+?
So yea if you feel you really must make an offer on it please be my guest lol!

pics of the crappier van have been added. I put it under 55-67 bus campers as it seemed the most fitting as it may be a camper and all.
