Looking nice! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the winch. Is that shifter cables I see under the van too?? I'm looking forward to seeing more of that too.

I still have a little to do on both areas. The winch needs to have a mount created that will attach to the frame rails and the shifter needs the last bits of metal added. Its located where the coolant hoses normally go through the hump under the heater core. Pics will come in a little bit. It takes so long for all these mods, yet its moving forward.

check out the last video I posted in my SAH quattro thread, I did something interesting with the shift cables using the stock vanagon shifter and front shift rail. Custom shifters can consume a LOT of labor.

I don't really understand why I'm building rock sliders for a road and sand surf van, but I thought it was a good idea. Yeah, I don't know why. Anyways

So the solid shaft will be the mount for the rock sliders. Welded in the rock slider portion.

So wail cutting off the solid bar sticking out the end, The grinder with a large cut off wheel kicked out of my hands and on to my knuckle causing a good 9 hour emergency room night.

All sewn up and ready to go back to work. Later I looked at the grinder and discovered what more then likely happened is the grinders gears stripped and that caused the quick binding and release. The grinder was trashed and I will never buy a Milwaukee grinder again. If they would have used steel gears and not plastic sh@t, then I would not have cut into the joint of my hand. Mad

I added some tubing to the rock slider on the sliding door side for LED lights. I hate not seeing where I'm steeping in the dark. Especially if has rained.. Shocked

I don't see a milwaukee grinder in your shop.. looks like a makita or knock off. Milwaukee makes some of the best tools period. They also sell all parts to consumers in house. Very nice to deal with.

You may be right. Its the grinder on the ground in the picture and I would check, but don't have it anymore. The grinders trigger design was really nice and big and that was the whole reason I bought it. O-well, Lesson learned the hard way.

Next comes the bumper and sub frame. All I wanted was to be able to tow and have good backup lights.

Next came the bumper cover. I have to admit that I made this harder then it needed to be, yet it turned out ok.

They say you shouldn't cut corners when you work, yet I'm ok with it this time Very Happy

In the end I added about 70 pounds of bumper weight to the van. Its a lot, yet its also a lot of protection for the rear. Moving forward I will see if I can reduce some of the interior weight to make up for the bumper. Its do-able.

Im an old guy with all my fingers, toes, eyes, and no stitches - about 15 years ago I started buying redundant safety equipment and keeping it with the power tools.

Yesterday I was grinding off four BMW exhaust manifold bolts and put a nice scatch on my facemask when the grinder ejected a bolt head off. I was pissed at scratching it right on my sightline.... Shocked

You know, I thought the welder would be most dangerous tool to use, but the grinder puts a hurting on me all the time. Lucky to have all my fingers at this point.

Did a little Seat work after the swivels where powder coated. First I cut up an old seat and took the rails. Then welding them to the base of the swivel seats. Now they slide in and out like a normal seat for easy access. There is a bolt in place to keep them from sliding around.

I don't understand all the metal work and welding for the drawer, did you change ideas along the way?

I found the plasma cutter goes right through foam very efficiently. Shocked Laughing That blank will be next summers fun board at some point.

Like all good plains, I cut before thinking and had to back track. The good news is the metal is thicker then the original and now the drawer is more secure. If only I could work in hindsight, the van would be done and it would be a much better job then I'm doing now. Anyways, I'm having fun. Dirty fun, but fun.

If you think that looks wonky, I got some good stuff coming up later... lol... the carnage is not done yet... Twisted Evil

Ocean. Your build is inspiring. I have had a set of used swivels to put into my van for a year and couldn't bring myself to weld them in permanently. Your seat rail solution is the answer my pea brain failed to figure out. Thanks. Now I just have to aquire a set of seat rails!

When you do it, make sure to use a thin shim on both sides the of seat rails when welding the seat frame. Otherwise it could shift and then the seat would be to tight. I also needed to add one bolt to secure it. Good luck.

Well it’s been along time since my last post. Work has been taking up all my time. I was able to get all the bumpers and odds and ends to line-x for coating. Here is a very loose fitting.
