Next came the bumper cover. I have to admit that I made this harder then it needed to be, yet it turned out ok.
In the end I added about 70 pounds of bumper weight to the van. Its a lot, yet its also a lot of protection for the rear. Moving forward I will see if I can reduce some of the interior weight to make up for the bumper. Its do-able. |
What purpose does the surfboard blank provide?
Anyways, my hat's off to you for taking on such a project. I'm sure it will be a beauty when complete. I'll be watching this thread. _________________ 87 syncro tintop

So, I did have a problem of where to put the webasco heater. I deceived under the front shifter was the best. Far enough away for the beds to have a peaceful nights sleep. The problem was making the special holding pan.
Good place as any.

Ok, so this is a little of me bitching about Vanagon design. Wial trying to take off the license plate flap, I realized the bolts in the back are in the frame of the body. WTF is this. I had to cut off the bolt head to free the license plate holder.
(Little German guy says to the other one at the VW factory): “Let’s put a nut on the inside of the vans sheet metal without access.” Hahaha “that will be funny.” .., Who ever said German designers where the best, was design illiterate.
Anyways, i installed weld in nuts to fix the drunk Germans design flaw. My rant is over. Back to your regularly scheduled programs people.

No need for the emergency brake hole. Freeing up some room and moving it to the dash board area.
I also added some holes for the Webasto heater vents. Should keep the cabin nice and cozy.
And a little anti rust treatment just in case. The body is very good and there really was nothing to fix, but you cant be to careful.

Yeah, I've been working on the van when I can. Right now my business has been taking away from this projects time, yet there will be a big update this week or the next. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

No one, I mean No-one would take this thing to the scrap yard without a title. |
A bit late now, but some States (most?) will issue an "abandoned vehicle" title. Some hoops to jump through, but you wind up with a clear title. |

Well, I haven't had enough time to work on this project do to real world work getting in the way. Yet I squeezed a little time in here and there.
From this
to this. All primed up in auto industry's best epoxy high build up primer. It took forever (Days) to clean this thing so it would take a primer without issues; yet it was worth it in the end.
The undercarriage was also done with epoxy and sound damper. Its black and doesn't like photos. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

Next was sound deadener. Its easy to apply with a spray gun, but I use a ton of it. In total, 3 gallons or more was used and covered almost everything. I think it will be worth it in the end though.

If the welds are going to be covered up, no reason to go crazy. After the paint it will all bend in. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

Heck yeah! I like that rear bumper you made a lot, might have to do something similar myself. _________________ Unnamed 1986 Syncro

Well after years this van was finially painted. Everything whent smooth and no problems spraying the monster liner. Some people may not like the monster liner look, but for me it looks great and with a bonus of no maintainence at all.
In total, 4 gallons of monster liner and three gallons of lizard skin sound deadener was used. The cost was about $4,000 cheaper then a good normal $5,000 paint job and I never have to wax it. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet
