Kryptkat has one on his double door panel. Haven't seen it in person but the photos look awesome.

Had one in Europe, 1999. One of the best summers of my life. Sorry about the lo-fi pictures, taken on film!

The mini popper was pretty darn nice... Stand up and do the dishes in comfort, look out at the world, lots of air and light.

Downside is the BIG lack of storage, lack of snugness when open, maybe a little flimsy eg. in a big wind, and that the sleeping is for 2 only.

Not sure id pay 1200 euros for such a thing(am I reading that link right?) - for that price I'd be looking for a Westy pop top or a hi top.

My old '70 Euro Westfalia had one of those. Very nice for stretching your legs in private, while letting in fresh air. It's too bad they weren't more popular over here.

Funny this came up. I live next to an operation called dubbox USA. They make a split window trailer and splitty van furniture for the affluent. I walked in interested in reproducing these for the US market. As soon as the small talk was done and the purpose of my interest things got really uncomfortable and awkward. I learned they too are interested in bringing these to us... I wish they were more friendly and humble, clearly more interested in the green then th VW, the only one in the parking lot was mine. NorthAmerican Campers would you bring these to us?

I am really surprised that no one in the States sells these poptops. I had to purchase mine from Remio but Remo does not ship outside of Germany so I had to go through a middle man and a 3rd man to ship it to the states. My motto is "whatever that van wants, the van gets".

Anyhow after arriving the instructions were in German so none of the body shops around my area wants anything to do with it. My wife and I had to type the whole instruction manual onto Google Translate and figure it out. After reading the instructions several times, I didn't think it should be too difficult to install. So with a jigsaw and some simple tools in hand, I went at it.

Package unwrapped.

Pop says measure twice and cut once.

Time to cut'

The hinges can actually be the template itself.

Clamp and drill.

Almost there.

Voila, done and its that easy!

Inside.

The kit does come with finish trimming pieces but I didn't use it.

Beautiful fit and finish.

It took me a weekend to complete the installation by myself. The top weighs less than 50lbs and the quality craftsmanship is top notch. I am very happy with this kit, a bit pricy but that's all relative. Good luck in your search and PM if you have any questions or would like a copy of the instructions in English. -Cheers.

We don't use the pop top often, but would be nice to have a little section to stand up in! I already have a full westy interior ready for another van.

can I ask a couple of questions about your roof kit, please?

In your original photo of the kit in the box, you show the items for trimming around the hole in the van roof. Namely, curved wooden strips, a plastic strip and the 'rubber' 'C' section trim. Although you go on to say you haven't installed these parts could you please advise whether the instructions say that the wood should go above or below the VW roof skin?

Also, could I second Tjet's question about what the standing height is with the roof raised. I have been interested in this roof type but the ones I have seen installed in the UK are not tall enough for me. However, I am 6'4" so they will probably suit most people!

Pilzdach, Hubdach, whatever you want to call it, I've long wanted one for my rig.

I emailed Reimo and a UK dealer with no reply from either. I contacted their listed US dealer, http://www.eurocampers.com/, and this was their reply:

"We would not be able to offer any roof products from Reimo. They will only ship these to certified installers. I do not believe there are any in the US."

Meanwhile SCA appears to make their own version:

Not that you couldn't add a shower into a westy. I just don't need the extra sleeping area, nor the extra weight. Since it's fairly low profile, maybe a gas saver over a westy top...
