Got tired of playing with sand paper so decided to cut some holes.
not sure where this is gonna lead but it's more fun. |

More metal work today, boxing in the under hood compartment.
still have a lot more to do on this part, gotta drop the passenger side compartment in one spot enough so I can box in a spot for the battery and it still fit under the lid in the under hood box I am making now. |

Man you're adding a bunch of metal! Will be interesting to see how much it weighs when complete.
Think it will be sub 2k? _________________ it's more fun loud and dirty |

not sure where it's gonna come in, but this is intended as 99% street so wanted the front end to have a little more weight to it. will have only added about a sheet and a half of 11Ga steel so not really a lot of weight. |

11ga
11ga is huge weight that the Baja REALLY does NOT need in the front. The factory body steel is 20-24ga. 11ga is .120"!! To me, a "sheet" is 8'x4' or 12' x 4'. And you say you are only using a sheet and a half? at 5.00lbs/square foot, 72sq' x 5 = you're talking 360lbs!
11ga is thicker than I use for skidplates to bash on rocks. It's thicker than roll cage wall. Are ya buildin' a battleship? Or a tank? _________________ Richard

Incredible build, just out of curiosity, with all the fabrication what made you decide to retain the thing front end vs going king/link? (other than the fact that you already had it) |

Got a good deal on the thing trailing arms and spindles so just went with it. At the time was not really planning on going this much in to it but I just got carried away with the project, not really a suprise. I wound up with a 496 in my Suburban the same way, it started as a donner vehicle cause I wanted to put 3/4 ton axles in my Blazer and changed course after I got it home, went from 350 to 454 to 496 then full roller 496 and 4L80E trans.
No telling what will happen when I start building an engine for the bug? And thanks for the comments on my build, it's really a learning experience for me, never done this kinda work before so just jumping in and doing what makes sense to me and hoping for the best. |

got the next 3 days off so should be able to make the lids and weld in a new dash panel and get it drilled for gauges and radio and stuff. |

I think I've seen more original sheet metal on a few sandrails, forget about "every nut & bolt replaced". I love everything you've done to it, I sure as heck don't want to get that involved in mine. BTW, where'd you source those latches? |

Still have 2 more days off so hope to get a lot more done, but did manage to grind all the welds and have it just about ready for some body filler after I drill holes for the gauges and switches and stuff.

Need to drill for the gauges what do you guys think of this set up?
from left to right:
volt meter, oil pressure, speedo/tach, fuel level, and oil temp.
was gonna run cylinder head temp but it's not offered Iin the gauges I want so gonna run volts instead. Will put the head light switch under the volt meter and turn indicators on each side of the speedo and high beam dummy light just above or below the speedo. |

It even kinda makes a VW emblem, maybe you can enhance upon it with some more sheet metal. |
