Some people need a high five.. in the forehead.. with a brick..

I wish I was in a position to help, but unfortunately, I am not.

I have a '79 bus that I was going to part out one of these days. Sad I was going to hoard the glass in case I ever needed it for my '73 but if no one closer to her can help sshe's more than welcome to have all my glass if it will fit.

I'll have to find someone near Stockton to help me remove the windows.

BTW did I mention I hate thieves and vandals with a passion Twisted Evil

You can push side windows out with your feet ( lay on the seat ) work pressure from front to back .
Put a lot of loose duct tape on outside so glass doesn't drop out and break .
You can remove old seals and soak them and reuse .
Works for flat rear 1/4 glass on bugs too .

I sent the above link to my girls in Phoenix along with a message asking if they have any friends with a truck that may be visiting there soon. Just so happens that an old boyfriend will be going there in a couple weeks so I told her he can take the glass and the goldfish to phx. She'll check with him tonite to find out the dates.

Pete, thanks for the info.

Note ; To remove windshield use a razor knife and cut ALL the rubber off OUTSIDE AND INSIDE...
older windshields are very fragile .

I probably have every piece of glass she needs except for the windshield and would be happy to donate it, although shipping glass from Michigan to AZ doesn't sound like the most efficient way to solve this. I'd donate to a "fix it" fund. Is there an AZ VW club that would be willing to coordinate the effort?

I installed three sliders and I have the glass from the two middle and drivers rear with one or two new seals I could take to her and do the install. I'll call channel 5 try to find out.

Hold your fundraising horses! shouldn't the repair take place after the vandals are arrested or a secured parking spot is found? What is her insurance policy going to cover? Just saying.

I

I disagree with half of your diagram !
cut the outside rubber off following the flat front plane of the glass ...The bottom edge with the "teeth" is where the rubber sticks like glue....ESPECIALLY older glass

really NICE fancy artwork Tcash .

Obviously you have never dealt with the rubber in a SW desert bus, that stuff gets so hard and petrified no knife known to man will cut it on the outside of the glass, the only option is the slightly less petrified inner lip. Also doing it there reduces the chance of scratching the paint under the seal causing future rust issues.

So lets forget about how to uninstall glass, most of us here know how. What is happening with this lady's bus. With one locked thread and this one there have been several willing to help. I called the TV station but they are closed on Sat. I'd hate for us to be well intentioned blowhards. I'd like to see that bus put back together. The chances of it getting smashed again are diminished now that it has made the news. I'd like to offer some glass or some bucks for shipping glass or a cold one or two for the fellow doing the labor. Has anyone found a direction?

Suggested direction (unfortunately, all I can do from this distance is make suggestions):

1) identify an individual or club in the Phoenix area who is willing to take ownership of a solution and represent Samba members. The windshield installation should probably be done by a professional but the other pieces might be something a Samba member could donate labor and do. At a minimum we could use someone to swing by and inventory what is needed, both in terms of materials and labor.

2) See if anyone in driving distance has glass they will donate. If not, I will donate everything except the front, as long as I don't have to come out of pocket for shipping.

3) Set up a PayPal fund to cover (i) new seals, (ii) shipping for glass if required, (iii) cost of new windshield, with installation. Seems like we should wait until Monday and talk to someone at the TV station. If they could serve as the repository for funds, everyone should be able to trust them to act in that capacity and no reason why the Samba shouldn't get a little airtime and good Karma out of this.

4) See if one of the Samba suppliers would be willing to donate or significantly discount a set of new seals. It would be cheap advertising with the TV station involved. I'd certainly be willing to reach out to several via email this weekend.

So...... I'll be happy to contact the station on Monday and report back here with donation details. I'll also contact WW, WCM, Midwest and German Supply to see if anyone is game for publicity in exchange for parts. Unless someone else wants to take the lead. Is there anyone reading this who is located in Phoenix who would be able to swing by and do an assessment of what is needed once we can connect you up with the station to identify the owner?
