Is the BN4 Eberspacher clock system available for retrofit on a 1972, Type 2b? We have a factory installed Eberspacher auxiliary gas heater that worked flawlessly for over ten years. An upgrade to the dash controlled clock system would be desirable, as we have no dash clock at this time .
We also have no radio and are looking for an OEM AM/FM/Casette radio. |

Im not sure that Id consider the timer clock an upgrade from the switch? Its more of a looky loo M-Code accessory. The actual time clock portion is more useful
The timer clock was simply made to set the turn on time at some point in the future and run for 15 min. Like you go to work in the cold at 6am. Well you get home - set it to go off that many hours ahead in the future. You go to your car the next morning and its warm. That's it.
But to answer your question - yes they have gray faced clocks out there but they seem to be the rare ones. I have one but its broke and I need to find a clock to donate parts from. Its an expensive endeavor as the plain clocks run in the 200 to 500 range, then the shipping and repairs will be a good $150 AND thats no guarantee that the stuff you supply will all interchange and work.
You can buy a black face clock for the 75 ad later buses. It will fit and work but not match your speedo and gas gauges - unless you then swap over to all black gauges.

The last grey face heater timer clock I had was sold to Belgium a couple of years ago for 300 Euros. At the time, I had decided I would most likely not end up with another 74 Westy.
I'll be selling the grey faced MPH trip speedo next I guess.
I would recommend buying a black face timer clock since they seem to be slightly more available. If you manage to find a grey unit when one comes up, you should be able to sell the black one pretty easily, depending on pricing.
You could always add one of these to the bottom of the dash and it will do the same thing.

Ok Hold onto your butts. I found a NOS BN4 for the Bay window. Its a later type too. So I guess most of the parts I have squirell holed can go Found it on eBay by chance as usual. I look form time to time and good things happen.
Lots of pics showing condition for future restoration guidelines. Also shows what it came with although there may be a piece or two - small stuff missing?
Notice the late BA6 knob with "TEMP" on it - completely irrelevant for this type of switch. Shows that it was sold with that type of knob. So having it on your BN4 set up would be technically correct.
Enjoy.
Nos Eberspacher nail and golf tee
NOS T1 Fuel filter - interesting VW part.
People always ask abut the scoop. What does the scoop look like
NOS or Restored?
TEMPLATES! Real Farking Templates! Ill scan these for Everett to have on deck as tif files.
Early installation instructions - not for this one being later.
And just a cool sticker on the ducting.

Nice. Those heaters are totally holy grail stuff for me...I pulled three out of junkyards in the late 90's and spent a lot of time getting two in working order and learning how they work. It is a beautiful, simple mechanical logic that once learned can keep your bus warm for decades and dispels all the superstition about them exploding and taking out an entire city block. My best junkyard find ever was a working egg timer stitch with the illuminated button.
Give that chunky knob a twist and beautiful, instant heat flash evaporates your tears of joy before they even have a chance to roll down your warm cheeks...
I too am a heater hoarder and truly appreciate your stash... |

This nice one has the sticker - I was looking at it wondering where it went on my 77? ?
Then I realized it was for a 72 with gas flap But I have two and can copy them. THe yellow sticker is back a few pages to print? Or you want me to send you one of "mine" Oh.....
So to gain better air flow through the OG cabinet vent, the center was cut out and screen installed.
I used a $2.59 piece of gutter cover screen. Stuart snipped it out and it actually fits - slides in the tangs on the back of the plate. I sanded the plate a bit, painted it fresh satin then pushed the screen back in. Easy project with way more airflow and looks the part.

I'm glad this topic popped back up, it just reminded me that I have a gas heater that I scavenged out of a bus back in the mid 90s. It looks like my crusty bay is gonna have heat.
& thanks for all the technical, it makes me feel setter about venturing into the unknown. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

There is not more I can put in here. I will probably go through some of my learning curve inaccuracies. Clarify somethings.
I plan on restoring an early BN4 but that will be in its own thread.

A fool and their $ are soon parted. If you think thats anywhere near $175, then I have three Ill sell you right now at $150. The number one rule in the heater game is the unit is the easy part. Its the other things that cost you money _________________
