Well done. Lovely photos and entertaining reading. I only have one question: as you state on the 2nd page, the your car is a 1970 model. It seems confusing to call It a 1969 at the top of each page? Is this due to a difference between how we in the US look at dating cars compared to your country? |
Thanks Marc. I guess the answer is that although the model year determines almost everything for a VW (and many classics in the US) I have never really been aware of it in the UK. So, in my mind: built 1969, ‘69 Ghia!
Our bay window Kombi has the same issue, built 1977, 1978 model. _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Excellent attention to detail as usual in all the tasks that you tackle out !
Once question if you can help me.
When looking at your convertible top opening procedure is that a seal attached on the bottom of the front bow where there are the locating pins?
If so how is this attached to the bow, with glue?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

That seal is held on with a metal strip with countersunk screw holes inserted into the seal similar to the strips holding the seals to the top mechanism.
I think only later cars used them. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Hi restocal63. I can’t answer that question, so I’m glad Braukuche did!
As you can see in the picture, the contact points in our car are at the very front edges of the bow, and so if the black strip between the pins is supposed to be a seal it might explain why it leaks so badly in the rain!

Thanks both for your prompt replies .
Mine is a 1971 US Import (Willow Green), almost the same as yours except that the engine is 1600 twin port and its missing the seal.
Shall check whether I can find any holes of the countersunk screws to which the metal strip was attached as Braukuche mentioned. |

Have rechecked and on my car there are no visible holes in the bow.
I confirm the front of the bow sits flush as you have mentioned.
In Malta it barely rains and wouldn't use it so leaks are not an issue from my end.
I was looking for originality but reading other threads 72-74 models have a different seal up front at the end, whilst previous models have different sealing options from what I am learning.
Thanks again for your help. |

So, I had squirrelled away a set of NOS VW hub caps and a set of VW Lemmertz beauty rings. Lucky me!
I thought I would fit them today for the VW event near us at the weekend. I don’t know if it is because the steel wheels are painted too thickly, or if the beauty rings just provide enough thickness to stop the hub cap engaging on the nubs but I could not for the life of me get two of the hub caps on with the beauty rings.
I have given up and just put on the caps alone (which went on easily).
Tips welcome. I plan to maybe sand down the paint at the nubs on the steel wheel to create a little more room.

Well, we’re back now from the VW ‘Volksfling’ show at Biggar. It hasn’t been held for the last two years but it’s the best VW show that’s local to us. The Ghia nearly didn’t make it as we were camping and it was so windy the Kombi was a handful to drive and Shona’s not keen to drive the Ghia. So, I drove the Kombi and Shona took our ‘normal’ car on Friday and when the wind died down on Saturday evening I drove home and collected the Ghia!
I had cleaned the Ghia to enter the ‘concours’ and the forecast was for mist overnight and I put a cover on. The wind had other ideas though, so I had to strap the cover on to stop it blowing away!
All good.

The show has really grown over the years, and the concours was much bigger than I remember. Nice selection of cars, but of course, more and more water cooled VWs. Didn’t take many pics but some really lovely vehicles on display.
Only two Ghias on show though, the other was also a ‘late ‘69’. Folk are always very interested and I had some good chats, including a very well known VW author who is interested in the Ghia for a magazine article-we’ll see what transpires!
The information sheets I had made worked really well. People often read the ones in the engine bay and trunk, but they were reluctant to pick up the folder of info and photos, so I might change that a bit.

I genuinely don’t go to shows trying to win. If you enter, you get a good parking spot, plenty of folk get to see the car and they are really interested to take pictures and chat and I really love the experience.
However, we did win a prize! It was for best engine, which I was actually delighted about, as I have put in a lot of work trying to get it looking as close to factory as possible and I’m reasonably happy with it at this stage.
The prize plaques were very cool and traditionally sign written and we got a big goodie bag of car stuff and hats too. I think Shona’s sister and her husband were as excited as we were!
I was feeling very content on the drive home in convoy.
