|
|
As I start changing my rail into how I want it to look, I want to give a nod to the VW bones.
I'm thinking about putting a Volkswagen script on the backside of my doghouse shroud visible just over the motor. I know it's air cooled and depends on airflow.
Do you think this would look good or would it cause a problem?

nah
the biggest thing that's causing a problem is that exhaust. _________________ Wash your hands

Weber Progessive and 009.
BTW... why does the engine lean to the left? _________________ Glenn

Kinda wonder same thing as Glenn, why is engine leaning... Sort of indicates problem with "pickle forks" (engine/transaxle mount)... I would be more concerned with that than cosmetic mods...

possibly even missing a mount. that is some serious lean.
Also yea, changing that carb and distributor combo you would be able to get some power out of the motor without having to mash the gas pedal. _________________ Wash your hands

Thanks for the reply's. A local VW mechanic took a look at it. He said there wasn't any motor or tranny mounts and that's what was causing the lean. I have the mounts and will put them in. Apparently, the PO ran without them.
By the title, he had it about 7 months. I've had it about 3 weeks. Gotta love PO's.
This is the best pic I had of the motor.
I changed the exhaust in the pic to a stinger that was in the extra parts that came with it, since the PO did a "custom job" to it. |

How many variations are there of the doghouse shroud? Any pics of the differences and what they are for? I'm thinking of powder coating the doghouse and my fins...any pics of this? |

Thanks!!!!
Where can I find out about the differences in the shrouds? I have several shrouds and fins that came with my rail. I would like to know if the one I have is the best one for my application or if I should switch to a different one. |

These are my extra doghouse shrouds...Are either one better than what I have currently? What are they from? Do they wear out and need to be replaced to where I need to keep these?
What is this? Is it necessary? I don't think there is one of these on my motor now. Should there be? What did it come off of?
These are my extra fins/tins. would they fit like what I already have? Could I get them powder coated and swap the others out? Would they fit or are they specialized per model?
Thanks for all the info and thanks for bearing with me as I am very much a NOOB with about 3 weeks of ownership on a 1st VW... |

I cut the baffle down to fit my bobcat/stinger. I haven't taken any new rear pics since I changed exhaust. I had to cut the flange off of the baffle, but still used a set screw to hold it in place. |

The yellow one is not a dog house shroud. _________________ Glenn

Use the black shroud with the correct oil cooler. Either chop off those outlets on them or get some plugs for them. If you plug them, drill a small hole in the plugs to let it shoot out a little bit of air.
In this picture, you don't need either of these pieces but I would use the one on the far left, good place to hold your wrench or beer.
In this picture, you don't need the one in the middle. But you do need the other four.

OK. Black doghouse shroud, then which oil cooler is the correct one, any model numbers or brand?
So if I get these parts powder coated will I need to do anything special or should they bolt up? |

The one you need is offset like this:
I bought one here, but there is word that this isn't the best brand. I think the might be supplied by Meyle company and need to be pressure checked on arrival. _________________ Wash your hands

Would it set in the shroud or outside? |

Technically its "outside" the shroud, but still get its air from shroud through its own set of sheet metal...
