What are the rare parts that everyone always wants but never can find? What should I grab?

I found a pair of old VW's, one a 65 and the other a 66, just around the corner from my parents place. The 66 is painted pink, missing the engine and in OK shape. The 65 is missing the engine and transmission, has been sitting on the ground and the pans are rusted out of it.

The 65 looks to be unmolested. The 66......i mean......it's painted pink. Both cars have original smoothies. I think I saw a full set of original hubcaps in decent shape. The dashes were uncut and had the chrome. The 65 had the original am radio.

What I am needing from the forum is a list of things that I should go get off of the cars. The person who owns the land said they HAVE TO GO. I feel they will be gone soon. He told me I could have both cars for scrap weight, but I do not have a place to put them right now.

PS Anyone in the Dallas/Fort worth area, let me know if you are interested. I will get some pictures if you are. I am sure the cars could be had for a steal.

EDIT: had vs has. The battle continues

the 66 rear package tray is not reproduced...a 67 will fit but it has the 67 wire channel stamped into it .
check for late 66 round button exterior door handles $200 pair .
$75 blue box flasher AND the $50 interior red "bulb" flasher knob

I will take a look at both of them. I do not hold out hope for the 65, but the 66 might be in a usable condition. Good suggestion.

You say they are not reproduced, but I see cip1 and wolfsberg listing them. Are they out and just listed or are people just that into "german steel?"

Interior still in it? if so the '66 only front seats, door panels with aluminum trim. If the interior is red salvage anything you can. there are folks looking for any usable red (pigalle) carpet and interior parts.

No luck on pigalle. That would be a fun find for sure.

I will take note of the other parts and look. The 66 is so custom that I cannot remember if it had original seats or not.

I was going to go today, but it is 34 degrees and raining at a great pace. I'll just stay inside and relax I think.

The directionals on a 65 and 66 Volkswagen are controlled by a lever under the steering wheel...you push the lever up when you want to activate the right directional bulbs located on the corners of the Volkswagen beetle...or...you can push the lever down to activate the left directional bulbs located on the corners of the Volkswagen beetle . that lever has 6 wires leading to the blue flasher box and hi low headlight controll and grounds in dash . there is a screw that tightens the switch to the column that gets broken off and makes the switch non useable .

64 degrees in St. Petersburg Razz

You might also want to save the 66 hood so you can swap it out for the 63 hood with the crest that you have on your green 66 .

branston ; good save on the door panels ; I haven't gotten into the Type6 interior yet...
.if you don't have door panels you don't think of them Very Happy

Rear bumper mounts off the '66. That style was used only on 1966-67 cars are have a unique shape yet to be reproduced

Grab the entire emergency switch, not just the Red flasher knob

Technically... the 66 and 67 ( really 62-67) turn switches are not "6 wire" turn signal switches..
They are 3 wire turn switches with an added 2 wire dimmer switch...
Good to grab for parts though..
(65 was the last year of the floor dimmer)

Notice how my signature say "my old 66?" It went away to pave the way for my now sold 70 Squareback. I had to sell it to make the move from Colorado to Texas easier.

I am going to get something type 1 or 3 in the next few months. Right now, I am aircooled free and I don't like it.

By "smoothies" do you mean hupcaps, or wheels?

65 are regular domed, 66 are flat.

No, I mis-spoke up above. I forgot that 66 went slotted wheels. My mistake.

Both cars have wide-5 smoothies. The stock style that were pre 66. The 65 has a nice set of original moon hubcaps if I remember correctly.

I will have to drive over and refresh my memory. It has been a few weeks.

Ah, OK.

When it comes to Bugs I'm biased towards 66 models, and I'd still be driving mine if it hadn't been smashed by an inattentive driver. It's a good year, even if there's some one year only parts. Smile
