rag63, thanks for the kind words! I enjoy this van when it starts and drives, but these days id almost rather burn it to the ground!

in the meantime....I continued with the engine reassembly:
torqued the heads...with gaskets and base shims. hoping for a low compression longer life engine...fingers crossed!Pray
(just saw the black prints on the fabric in the pic...guess I get to go clean that now too...)

got the heater boxes on, and the lower engine tins.

in the morning my list includes:
find the drivers side heater flap, install heater tubes and reconnect cables, and double check the supply and return fuel line clamps are on and tight.

refill with oil. reinstall oil filter.

install muffler.

install plug wires, and set timing, and complete the rest of the tip end (like the little bits...)

then test fire it and see if it starts... Pray

more to come soon...

Well...10:30 pm and only made it to my apartment in Renton. Laughing

Plenty of fine tuning and tweaking to do to this motor. Loves to run hot for some reason but I’m making it better little bits at a time. Getting a bunch of stop start on and off time on the engine at least! A proper break into!

Stopped to grab notchboy’s trailer, and then met with a buddy for some Vw parts he had I am dropping off along the way...long time no see dug!

Stopped in at a meet I frequent of local millennial car enthusiasts. They always geek out at the van! Laughing making a headlight adjustment, buying a couple cases of water, and hitting the road to Portland here shortly I hope 🤞

Pulled into Portland at Xevins place around 2:25am....no issues! I have SLOWLY started to trust this thing...we shall see how it does tomorrow in 65-70 degree mountain climbs vs 45-50 degree flats (temperatures, not angles) like I just finished.

First thing to fix tomorrow is the speedometer...

Second thing is the stupid heater. One of the acordion tubes fell off so I gotta find a workaround if I want any heat...and I do.

Likely i may even change the oil tomorrow...depends on how I feel and my time. Gotta be in Sacramento around (grass valley) by Thursday so kinda wanna get moving so I can take it slow and easy.

Alright! The long day is just about over...let’s get everyone caught up shall we?

Came into Kevin’s around 2:30 am Wednesday. Woke up at 9, and organized the van. Needed to know where tools were when screws hit the fan. (Ironically...see below...) so cleaned it up:

I have a few pics more to upload (uploaded those in town yesterday during the drive), and a story about that screw hitting the fan...but it’s gonna have to wait! No pics will upload from where I’m at. Sad

I tweaked and fiddled and installed a new o2 sensor and fiddled some more and FINALLY got the engine to run at a reasonable temp. The idle is much to low but it was strong and steady. It’s very sluggish to get revved up, and power is less then I like, but I like not melting my heads. I made it all the way to Chico area where I fueled up (took highway 58 from Eugene into Klamath falls, much better drive then i5! Not to many hills!) before something went wrong. Started idling lope-y, and determined that pulling the fuel injector wire on cylinders 1 did nothing and 2 didn’t minimal to change idle speed. Doesn’t sound bad....no big red flags besides rough idle...RAN IT.

Did another 150 miles on 3 cylinders to the place I am staying. Diving in later to determine cause. Compression check, test for power at injector, test injector (I think I have a spare or will swap between cylinders) and also just to be sure I’ll likely retorque heads and readjust the valves. Despite 3 out of 4 running right, it still didn’t get to hot!

Fun fact: my temperature reference...if the oil light flickers at idle it’s to hot. Seriously. I kid you not.

Never flickered after Eugene with the new fuel setting in afm (richer under a load) and the new o2 sensor. Happy as a clam!

Updates another day, gonna be here a week. So talk amongst yourselves and see you from the road soon, I’m sure!

Can’t believe you resisted a handprint, initials or a VW logo in all that freshly poured concrete. Then again the home owner would’ve probably destroyed you Wink Laughing Safe travels brother.

So to finish the story fully...

Stopped at newfishers place in Eugene, and grabbed dinner with him. Replaced my o2 sensor and tweaked a few things while I was waiting for him. Got it fully dialed in at this point. It’s running smooth, low idle but no oil light at idle, so I’m ok with that.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Just after dinner we went and rescued a subaru swap that blew out all its oil a few minutes south of us...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then filled up and took highway 58 to Klamath falls as I said before...

Only right as I left the fueling station I hear a funky noise. I was already pulling over to grab something so I killed the engine within a second or so, lucky me...

The screw that goes here?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It’s fallen here:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Removed it and kept rolling...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Fueling up at 38* prompted a heater check...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Which is when I realized I had lost a heater tube I repaired earlier that wasn’t fully attached apparently...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I got that plugged and made it so half my heater worked (drivers side off engine only) and moved on. Got into Chico and noted the idle sounded lope-y. Pull a injector wire at a time and determine its number 1 not firing. Spark worked fine, fuel no effect.

Made it to old priest grade and accidentally went up it. I think I was less then a half mile from the top and turned around to go up the other way. So stinking steep!!!! I had trouble walking across it. The van wouldn’t go up in first at full throttle so I decided to turn around and try the secondary street. Much easier..
